Further details
Montejaque couldn’t be in a better location if you’re wanting to escape the Costa crowds. It’s a charming, traditional Andalucian ‘pueblo blanco’ (white village) with some of the friendliest locals you’ll find anywhere in Spain. locally many leisure pursuits are available; walking, mountain biking, climbing, tennis, horse riding, bird watching. It’s set in the stunning mountainous scenery of the Serrania de Ronda and Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park with enormous potential for walking and a whole range of adventurous (and not so adventurous) outdoor activities. The nearby Caves at Piletta, where you can see early pre-historic cave paintings, are an absolute must – but don’t expect a slick guided tour and stylish gift shop. It’s much better than that! The village itself is a maze of narrow streets and there’s more than a few tapas bars and cafes to explore as well as some restaurants, this is a quiet, rural place – fast becoming a fashionable and slightly bohemian retreat for art and stressed Spaniards from the big cities. You won’t find too many English speaking people here, but the locals are always happy to welcome outsiders. You’ll probably spend quite some time in nearby Ronda. Although a busy tourist centre (and for good reason) Ronda is a wonderful place. Let it get under your skin. Here you’ll find restaurants aplenty, one of the oldest bull rings in Spain (well worth a look, even if you hate the idea of the ‘sport’) and Ronda’s main attraction, El Tajo – the enormous, stunning gorge. Linger on the Puente Neuvo and dare to look down into the gorge’s depths (trying not to think about the poor people who used to be thrown to their doom from where you’re stood). If you can drag yourself away from the snail’s pace village life of Montejaque or the buzzing atmosphere of Ronda, why not go on a day trip further afield, the magnificent cities of Granada or Seville. In fact, if you’ve got time, you could do both – arguably two of the most wonderful cities in Spain.

Owner profile

About the owner
We live near the lake district and enjoy walking, climbing and the great outdoors. We also enjoy travelling and used to do home exchange when our children were young. Carole works in a school and Martyn is MD of a house building company.

Year purchased: 2005

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought the house because we both like 'real' Spain, the 'great outdoors', and to be near places of interest. Easy access from Malaga, Seville, Jerez and Gibraltar airports was also important. Having Ronda just down the road is also a great benefit for when we want anything for the house and Carole likes all the shoe shops as well! It's a great place to wander around in the evening when the locals come out to parade. I visit once a year with my rock climbing partner and we enjoy climbing at the many quiet crags from 10 minutes to an hour or so away. Our two boys who are in their 20's also sometimes make it across for some climbing. When Carole and I visit we enjoy some great walks in the mountains and valleys. Our favourite time of year is May and June when the wild flowers are amazing.

Unique benefits of the property
We are only a couple of minutes from our village's main street which has several small shops selling pretty much all you need including good fresh produce. There is one hotel and quite a few bars offering tapas or a meal. We equipped the house to a good standard for our own enjoyment rather than as a basic holiday home. Air-con is important on evenings at the peak of summer, although we prefer to sleep with the window open if its not too hot. The pool is a real bonus. We like to spend the day out and about and get back for late afternoon for a couple of hours by the pool. Our lemon tree seems to fruit all year round and you are welcome to pick some for your gin and tonic! If you fancy a trip further afield there are trains to Cordoba and Granada or an easy drive to Jerez or Seville.
