Cortijo "Rio Claro" is set within the “Sierra Maria–Los Velez Parque Natural” with stunning views over the mountains “Mahimon” and “Muelar”. It is only 3kms from Velez Blanco yet the locals call it “tranquil” due to its private and secluded location. It will be an adventure or relaxing holiday for the eco friendly tourist. Construction is traditional with exposed beams and thick stone walls keeping the inside cooler in the summer months. The property is divided into 2 units. Guests are "spoilt for choice" with walking, cycling, endless scenes for painting, and naturalists have an abundance of wildlife including regular visits overhead from Golden Eagles and Griffon Vultures (flock of 36 maximum seen so far!). Sit on the terrace of an evening and gaze at the Milky Way whilst listening to the sounds of Cicadas and, in the spring, Frogs from the stream at the bottom of the grounds and Nightingales. This is a setting for those who deserve more than just the sun.

Notes on prices
Rates shown are for the exclusive rental of the whole property per week in euros - the different columns show the rates depending upon how many in the group and therefore which unit you require. Unit 2 sleeps upto 6 in 2 bedrooms and unit 1 sleeps upto 13 in 4 bedrooms. Availability as per the calendar for the large unit (1) only, as the whole property is exclusively for one party at a time. Prices are for 1 week min. with pro-rata rates for extra days.
Changeover day
Arrival and departure dates are flexible to suit demand.

The Right hand end of the property has its own front door leading into the Lounge/kitchen area with open fire, oven/hob unit, double sink and fridge. The 1st bedroom (Double) is accessed from the lounge. The Bathroom with short bath/shower, toilet, bidet and wash basin is part way up the stairs leading from the Lounge. Upstairs is Bedroom 2 (quadruple). Both Bedrooms face south looking over Mountain Mahimon. |

Notes on accommodation
Being in the protected Natural Park 3kms from the village, the property is serviced by mains water, bottled gas (Butane) for cooking/water heating and the fridges, and Solar power for the lighting. An inverter is installed in each unit for Laptops/mobile phone chargers, shavers etc. A generator is available for larger electric loads if required and by prior arrangement. There is also a small outside kitchen/utility room used for bar-b-q equipment, extra table and chairs and an oven for guests of unit 1.
Outside
Terraced at front of property with garden furniture, the property is accessed by a private drive and has 2½ hectares of land set to Almond and Olive trees, with Figs and Aloe Vera. The south boundary is bordered by the stream Rio Claro (River Clear).
Coast/Beach
Beaches fronting the Mediterranean are approximately 45 minutes away with a mix of popular resorts or quiet rocky coves.
Velez Blanco has one of the nicest swimming pools around, set in a clearing in a wooded park on the slopes of Mt. Mahimon and overlooking the Blanco Valley. There is a restaurant and Tapas bar beside the pool.
Golf
There are various golf courses approx 40 minutes away in the Vera/Mojacar area.
Skiing
Approximately 2 hours (motorway most of the way) from the Sierra Nevada ski resort with it's 78kms of runs and some 24 lifts.

Claire is also an NVQ3 trained Chair Based Exercise leader with 28 years experience in care for the elderly and/or handicapped. Respite care can be provided by prior arrangement if required.
We are also able to offer our guests Spanish, English or Dutch lessons by prior arrangement. Again, please contact to discuss your requirements.
Travel
Alicante, Murcia and Almeria airports are all about 1½ hours drive so a car is highly recommended. However, for those wishing, we can arrange transport to and from the airport by separate agreement and there are local taxis in Velez Blanco and Rubio.
The A91/92N motorway runs just south of Velez Rubio from near the coast at Puerto Lumbreras to Granada via Baza with it's beautiful Lake. At Puerto Lumbreras the motorway joins the main E15 motorway from Almeria to the top of Spain via Valencia.
Distances
Our local village, Velez Blanco, is 3kms away. Both Velez Rubio and Maria are 8kms away. Lorca is 30mins and Murcia about 1hr. Granada is 1½hrs. All timings are by car.
Further details
There are various restaurants within 4kms including the renowned "Meson El Molina" and "El Palacil" along with numerous small cafe/bars frequented by the local villagers. Both the Velez's have medical centres covering the full 24hrs of each day. All 3 local towns hold weekly markets offering freshly grown produce (Wed, Sat and Sun). Both units are fully prepared prior to your arrival with bed linen, tea towels, towels etc which are changed weekly. Please bring your own beach towels if required. A separate laundry service is also offered for a small charge.
