The apartment is in a mansion block that is over 200 years old and which has been extensively renovated. It can accommodate 6/7 people and has been furnished in the local Andalusian style. It overlooks a patio for exclusive use of the residents and there is parking in the basement garage. Private parking is essential if you come to Sanlucar by car. Sanlucar is located in the far south of Spain on the Atlantic – on the Costa de la Luz (coast of light). North Africa is not far away. It not only has great food, fine wine, lovely beaches, a warm climate and Europe’s biggest wildlife reserve on its doorstep, ‘this near perfect place’ has a people with a passion for life that is always enthralling. The town has an old quarter (barrio alto) and a relatively newer part (barrio bajo) that comprises much of the lower part of the town and the beach area. The barrio alto (where the apartment is situated) is where most of the centuries old convents, churches and palaces are located.

Sanlucar has two beaches with fine grained golden sands. There are sailing, canoeing and windsurfing clubs, all of which provide lessons. Horse riding is also a major feature of the area. There are a number of local centres, many of which offer lessons in riding and dressage. There are many golf courses in the region. On the outskirts of town there is a golf club which has fine views over the Guadalquivir river and the Doñana National Park beyond.

Special interest holidays
The Doñana national park is famous for the variety of species of birds, either permanent residents, winter visitors from north and central Europe or summer visitors from Africa, such as colourful colonies of flamingo. In the marshes and amid the cork oak forests, you've a good chance of seeing grey herons, lanner falcons, ring and turtle doves, partridges, oxpeckers, cattle egret, storks, vultures and possibly the rare Spanish Imperial Eagle. There is a twice daily boat trip to the park from the pier on the Bajo de Guia in Sanlucar. You can also explore the park in a safari jeep or on horseback.
There are 3 towns in the area that make sherry: Sanlucar de Barrameda, Puerto de Santa Maria and Jerez. There is not much difference between the sherries of Jerez and Puerto de Santa Maria, Sanlucar, however, produces a unique sherry - Manzanilla. Manzanilla can only be made here due to the micro climate. There are 9 sherry producers in the town - some offer guided tours.

Further details
Sanlucar is famous for its seafood, particularly langostinos, its fresh vegetables grown in the area surrounding the town, and its splendid manzanilla sherry. The best place to eat is in the restaurants and bars by the waterfront (Bajo de Guia), which also have a great selection of wines. However there are many other tapas bars and restaurants in the town that offer excellent value for money. Most are only a few mins walk from the apartment. Palace adjacent to apartment block has a beautiful cafe area and exotic gardens that are open all day.

Owner profile
About the owner
We are a Scottish/English couple - not big property owners, and we have just the one apartment in Andalucia. We wanted to acquire a comfortable holiday home for ourselves away from all the big 'Costa' developments, in the very Andalucian town of Sanlucar de Barrameda, which had become one of our favourite places to visit. As our children have grown up they too have become big fans of Sanlucar, especially in their teenage years when they could safely wander around the old streets and squares, the beach and the bars, unsupervised by us. We always discover something new each time we visit, and regular attendance at the excellent language school in Sanlucar has helped us to get to know the place and the people.
Year purchased: 2004
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
We love the very Andalucian nature of Sanlucar, which has been preserved in spite of so much development in Spain. The old streets and squares remain, and we were lucky to find a property which is in the heart of old Sanlucar. In the summer months it is bustling with visitors, many from Seville, and in the winter it is much calmer and very relaxing, often with beautiful, bright weather. We have also enjoyed being able to visit the Donana, a fiercely protected nature reserve but which is just a short boat trip from Sanlucar. Sanlucar is also a wonderful base for visiting the historic towns of Jerez and Cadiz, which never lose their attraction for us. Gastronomically speaking, the combination of the freshest fish, manzanilla, and sunshine is irresistible, we find!
Unique benefits of the property
Our property is in the heart of the old quarter, but is a well equipped, modern apartment. Our neighbours are, on one side, a sherry bodega, and on the other side, a historic church, and the palace of the Duchess of Medina Sidonia. Two of the bedrooms overlook the palace gardens which are at the back of our apartment. Just along the road is the old castle, part of which has been refurbished to accommodate a very stylish restaurant. A 5 minute walk, past the old market, takes you to the main town square with its fountain, palm trees, tapas bars, and endless opportunities for sitting around and watching the world go by. From there you can stroll through to a smaller square and on down a tree lined promenade to the beach.
