Special interest holidays
There are many signposted walks that can be completed from Pitres, with the most famous being the GR7 that goes in one direction to the high village of Trevelez, and in the other direction to the three villages of Bubion, Capileira and Pampaneira (takes 1 - 2 hours). Serious walkers can scale the Mulhacen (3,482m) or Veleta (3,398m), and there are lots of shorter walks via local trails or the medieval pathway into the villages lower down (Mecina, Fondales, Ferreirola etc). There are also local companies offering mountain bike hire and tours, and horse riding. For those interested in the local cuisine, the Alpujarras is famous for its ham, sausages, wine, cheese, chocolate, honey and jam! You can buy a great selection of each in the village, and the tapas bars and restaurants offer a good opportunity to try the traditional Spanish dishes and wine.
Travel
Visitors can fly to either Malaga or Granada airports. Granada is 1 - 1.5 hours by car, or by direct bus route approximately 2.5 hours. No car is needed but can be hired from the airports. Buses travel between Granada and Pitres 3 times a day, every day.
Further details
The village center is about a 3 minute walk from the house and has a 24-hour Medical Center (Medical Helicopter to Granada and Motril Hospitals), a supermarket open 6 or 7 days a week, a traditional bakery and butcher, and a good number of lovely tapas bars and restaurants. On a Friday there is a farmers' market. There is also a public outdoor swimming pool at Pitres Camping.

Guest comments
"Pitres is an idyllic village, surrounded by picturesque countryside and breathtaking hillside walks. The square is abuzz with friendly and welcoming locals (especially if you try and speak at least the odd word of Spanish) whiling away the afternoon in the sunshine nibbling on tapas and enjoying a glass of wine or a cold beer. The house itself is set a short walk back up the cobbled streets, and although the exterior looks exactly as I imagine it would have 100 years ago with its whitewashed stone fascia and enormous wooden door, the interior has been wonderfully renovated whilst remaining true to most of the original features. I really enjoyed my stay, it was comfortable without losing any of the "simple living" reasons I wanted to stay there. If it's a quieter and a slower, more relaxing pace of life you're looking for, then this is the getaway venue is ideal. I'm almost reluctant to recommend it just in case it's fully booked when I next want visit!" Matt Hoffman, London.

Owner profile
About the owner
Hello, my name is Clare and I have lived between Granada, the Alpujarras and the UK for over 5 years. I fell in love with Pitres when I was visiting as a tourist, and have spent the last three years lovingly restoring my 300-year-old village house there.
The rest of the time I run an ecommerce company selling academic textbooks!
Year purchased: 2007
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
Pitres for me is the perfect village. It is lively in that it has plenty of bars and restaurants, and a fantastic 'fiesta del pueblo' (village festival) in August, but at there same time there is utter tranquility! It is a great base from which to explore the area by foot as most of the walking trails in the region pass through it and it is very close to some of the other lovely pueblos in the area, each with their individual charm.
