The house is a modern rebuild on the site of an old terrace village casa. It is on three floors. The ground floor, formerly a workshop and store now serves as a garage and utility room in which is the washing machine and where clothes can be hung to dry. The first floor contains the main living/dining room, kitchen, bathroom and principal bedroom and a second small bedroom. On the next floor are the third bedroom and the roof top terrace which is ideal for lounging in the sun, taking al fresco meals and, above all, an aperitif while watching the sun set. In La Nou there are: small supermarket, baker, hairdresser, doctor, pharmacy, haberdasher, wine co-operative selling locally grown and produced wines, and a lively bar. The village is served by an adequate bus service to both Torredembarra and Tarragona so that a car is not essential, but very practical, for getting to the beaches and exploring the countryside.

Notes on accommodation
The principal advantage of the house is peace and quiet. If you are seeking rest, relaxation, warmth, peace and good walks this is the place for you. The loudest sound you are likely to hear is the chiming of the church clock and that ceases well before bedtime. Although there is no live television there is a TV set connected to a DVD player. All windows have shutters fitted. The living room windows have fly screens. From the house there are walks in all directions on traffic free farm tracks so La Nou is ideal for keen walkers. The local beaches all have soft golden sand, are guarded in the holiday season and provided with free fresh water showers. All have restaurants behind or near the beach.

Accessibility
Due to the steep stairs the house is not suitable for toddlers or adults who have problems with stair climbing.

Outside
The large secluded roof terrace is ideal for lounging in the sun, alfresco meals, and admiring the sunset. An awning provides shade for part of the terrace. There is a table and four chairs and several sun loungers.

Coast/Beach
Torredembarra, Altafulla and La Mora beaches are all about 15 minutes by car. Torredembarra beach is huge, the two others are smaller. There are also several small, secluded coves mostly frequented by naturists although stripping is not compulsory, some of which can be reached only on foot or by boat. The main beaches have lifeguards during the holiday period and free fresh water showers are installed. Car parking close to the beach is normally no problem and usually there is no charge.

Golf
There are several local golf courses, the most convenient probably being the Club de Golf Reus Aiguesverds or the Bonmont course near Salou.

Travel
A vehicle, driven down or rented, while not essential, is a great convenience. La Nou has an adequate bus service to Torredembarra and Tarragona. Barcelona airport (Easyjet) is about 60 mins drive. Reus airport near Tarragona (Ryanair) is about 30 mins. There are railway stations at Torredembarra and Altafulla from where there are excellent train services to Barcelona, Tarragona and beyond. The new International Rail Link halts at Barcelona and Tarragona Campo stations for fast access to Madrid.

Distances
La Riera de Gaia 3km.
Altafulla 8km.
Torredembarra 10km.
Tarragona 12km.
Reus 15km.
Barcelona airport 85km.
All distances are very approximate.

Further details
In La Nou there are; a small supermarket, baker, hairdresser, doctor’s consulting room, pharmacy, haberdashery/general village store, excellent friendly bar where good simple meals are served, a wine co-operative selling locally grown and produced wine, and a post office. In Altafulla, which is a small town, there are all the usual shops and other facilities and the same applies in Torredembarra which is considerably larger. The chief supermarket there is Carrefour. At the western end of the huge beach is a large marina with bars, restaurants and shops fronting the quay. Food in this area, as might be expected, is Catalan in flavour, while fish, shellfish and salads figure in the menus to a great extent. Restaurants abound and you will be spoilt for choice. There is a wide variety of locally grown and produced wines and cava, with the reds being particularly noteworthy. The large Tuesday market in Torredembarra and the smaller Saturday market in La Pobla de Montornes are well worth visiting. Further afield there are many places to visit, too many to list in the space available but, to be noted are: the ruins of the monastery of Vespella de Gaia (which forms part of the view from the terrace), the monasteries at Poblet, Santes Creus and Montserrat. Reus is noted for its Modernist architecture although less renowned than Barcelona. The Ebro delta is not far distant and provides a marked contrast of scenery. Tarragona is, of course, world famous for its extensive Roman architectural remains.

Hello Tony,
Just a note to say how much I enjoyed my stay at La Nou.
I found the house to be really comfortable, well equipped and above all tranquil.
What a view from the balcony!

The weather was scorching, some days you couldn't touch the steering wheel of the car!
Thank you,
Best Regards,
Peter.

Owner profile

About the owner
I am Tony Mortlock. I live on a Dutch barge at present moored to the South of Burgundy in central France. I have a daughter and a son, who is married, and one grand-daughter aged 16. Over the past 20odd years my main enthusiasm has been barging, principally in France. Prior to becoming a bargee I backpacked, played squash, rowed and listened to jazz. I still read a great deal. I have friends who live in Catalonia, in particular the area near Tarragona. In the course of visiting those friends my wife and I became increasingly attracted to the region and especially to the village of La Nou. We decided that we had lived on a barge for long enough and it was time to try some-thing different.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
No 12 Carrer Major was For Sale so we bought it, principally for its peacefulness and the wonderful view from the terrace. Sadly, within three years, I lost her due to cancer. I have not yet decided to move to La Nou, though I visit there quite frequently, and the family go there for holidays. I feel that it is a pity the house stands empty for much of the time so have decided to make it available for holidays for others.

Unique benefits of the property
La Nou is sufficiently far inland to escape the rush and traffic of the coastal strip. However, it is not so far that a change of scene and atmosphere presents any difficulty.La Nou is built on a ridge and stands at about 100 metres altitude. No 12 is near the top of the ridge and there is always movement of air to keep the atmosphere fresh. t is never stiflingly hot. Other than enjoying the terrace my principal occupations are walking or cycling on the many farm tracks leading in all directions within a couple of minutes walk of the front door. As a change I go down to the beach as sea swimming is another of my favoured activities.
