Notes on accommodation
The traditional construction of the house means that it remains pleasantly cool during the warmer summer months. The wood burning fire provides some welcome warmth during cooler winter evenings. The tiled kitchen is large, comfortable and well equipped. The house is newly decorated and floors have been neatly finished with easy to maintain laminated pine flooring or with attractive marbled tiles. Furnishings are new, but traditional in style with items such as the wrought iron kitchen table set complementing the traditional bookshelf in the lounge.
Outside
There is a large private walled and south facing roof terrace with pergolas and outside furniture in which to relax and enjoy spectacular views over the Sierra Lujar mountains. You may perhaps prefer to read a book on the balcony of the covered terrace on the first floor while watching out over the neighboring orchard and private walled and tiled recreation area below. Outside and to the right is a pretty cafe/ restaurant garden where you can sit and chat in the shade of orange and lime trees. To the right a road leads down to the main square with cafes, bars restaurants and shops all within easy reach.
Coast/Beach
The warm Mediterranean beaches can be reached in about 45 minutes by car. Known as the ‘Costa Tropical’ this region is mostly associated with the pretty coastal town that sits at its centre, Almuñécar. The other important cities and towns that make up the Costa Tropical are Motril, Salobrena and Almunecar's more picturesque appendage, La Herradura. Nerja is only about a 5 minute drive from the La Herradura border past the picturesque Marina del este with its popular scuba diving beaches.
Golf
A number of good quality golf courses in Granada (Armilla) Motril and Otivar are easily accessible in less than 45 minutes by car.
Travel
There are direct flights to Granada The airport is located about 8km outside the city of Granada. There are several bus services from the airport which meet the arriving planes and take you direct to Granada. By car, leave the airport on the A-44/E-902 travelling south from Granada towards Motril and after 34km take the exit east for Lanjarón. Then follow the signs to Órgiva. Malaga airport is now easily accessible thanks to the new motorway links and a daily bus runs direct to Orgiva (3p.m.)
Distances
Órgiva is 50km south of Granada in La Alpujarra, a beautiful region of fertile valleys south of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, bordered to the south by the Sierro Lujar Mountains which run down towards the Mediterranean. Perhaps the most picturesque villages of the Alpujarra are on the slopes of the Poqueira Valley. From Orgiva you can drive up to the beautiful ‘white villages’ of Pampaniera, Bubion and Capileira. The nearby spa town of Lanjaron has a distinguished history as a health resort
Further details
The Alpujarras has an interesting history which is today still evident in the Moorish architecture and terraced hillsides that exude a sense of times past. The most distinct features are the flat roofed houses with long narrow chimneys and the balconies (tinaos) which join one house to the other across the narrow streets. If you stray from beaten path, you will be sure to catch sight of some the region´s abundant wild life, such as the Cabra Hispanica, a mountain goat which roams the mountains in herds and is often seen standing on pinnacles, silhouetted against the sky. But as soon as it smells the scent of man it will bound up the steepest slopes with amazing speed. The Alpujarra is also famous for its excellent birdwatching - the colourful Hoopoe with its stark, haunting cry, is a common sight. The village of Trevélez - famous throughout Spain for its superb mountain hams, or jamón serrano - is, at over 4,840 feet above sea level, the highest village in Europe. The landscape itself is a series of gorges and surrounding hills with whitewashed villages clinging to the hillside, beneath the imposing Sierra Nevada peaks of Mulhacen, Veleta and Caballo, all over 3000m. There is water everywhere from the melting snows of the high sierras; rivers, streams, cascading waterfalls and irrigation channels (acequias) built centuries ago. The walking routes have been here for centuries and were the main communication routes for the area, originally the mule tracks which were used for all commerce in the area. Some of the paths (caminos) exist since medieval times and are part of longer walking routes including the GR7 which runs all the way from Algeciras in the south of Spain to Andorra in the north.

Guest comments
We had wonderful holiday in this lovely Spanish style house in the pretty market town of Orgiva. The house is really tastefully decorated, comfortable and well fitted out. The roof terrace was amazing with wonderful views of the mountains, so private and peaceful. It is ideally situated to enjoy walking in the mountains and only a short drive to the coast. We took a bus to Granada and spent two days exploring this fascinating city. A truly unforgettable holiday.
Great holiday! Very nice house and well decorated. Surprised there were 2 bathrooms! View from roof terrace wow! 2 mins walk from restaurants/bars. Great farmers market, locals very friendly. Short drive to Granada. Secure parking.
Owner profile
About the owner
Dr Chris Day, I am retired although I occasionally teach in the UK to supplement my income. I travel out to the house in Orgiva when I am not working and the house is not booked out.
Year purchased: 2006
Why the owner chose a home in this location
I like to walk in the beautiful mountains above Orgiva. I like the relaxed and friendly atmosphere there. I also like to visit the Mediterranean beaches and the cities of Granada and Motril which have a lively and varied cultural program throughout the year. While a fairly accessible destination, the area is sufficiently remote to deter those visitors who may not wish to venture far from familiar surroundings. The foreign travellers who arrive here consequently usually fit in well with the more socially minded local population.
Unique benefits of the property
The house is conveniently located in the centre of Orgiva, near to the main square, shops and cafes. Close by the house, a very pretty restaurant garden provides an ideal spot to sit and chat during the warm summer evenings.
