Like all troglodyte dwellings that have been sympathetically restored and only modernised where necessary, the cave house retains its inherent charm and quirkiness. The hewn-out rooms with their arched ceilings differ in shape and size. The uneven walls, whose contours have been mellowed by decades of whitewash, feature niches and alcoves framed by ornate Moorish plasterwork. Great pains have been taken to decorate and furnish the house in a combination of traditional Andalucian and Moroccan styles. Whilst conjuring up an exotic atmosphere and a bygone age, we have not compromised the need for modern amenities. All in all, the cave house is unlike any other type of dwelling you will encounter. It promises to be a unique and fascinating experience; both beautiful and atmospheric. The inherent nature of the cave house means that it is cool in Summer and very easy to heat and keep warm in Winter.

Accessibility
The house can be accessed on full or my normal vehicle. However, because of its location at the top of a hill it would not be suitable for the very elderly or anyone with mobility problems unless they had their own transport. The road outside the house is a cul-de-sac and is always very quiet.

Coast/Beach
Mojacar playa and mojacar pueblo are 120km from Baza. The playa is a new purpose-built tourist resort. Its bars, restaurants, shops, hotels, discos and commercial centre line the 7km seafront.

Special interest holidays
Every Wednesday morning there is an outdoor market where you can find everything from fruit and veg to local pottery and from clothes to wicker donkeys. On Sunday mornings is the service station on the outskirts of the town hosts a car boot sale.

Further details
The typically Spanish town of Baza is situated in the famous cave house region of the Granada province. It lies on a plateau encircled by hills and mountains. The narrow streets of the old town wind their way into Baza's main square. Here you will find the town's largest church, its town hall, a café bar and a variety of shops. Should you visit here in January just before 12th night (Spanish Christmas) you will discover the square and the surrounding streets transformed into a mediaeval market.

Over the years the original old town has expanded and wider streets with supermarkets and more modern shops have appeared. Plan your visit for the first and second week of September and you can watch (from a safe distance!) the cascamorras. This is a Baza tradition, where hordes of mainly young people cover themselves in used engine oil and stampede down the hillside towards the main square, leaving black hand prints on everything in their reach along the route.
The cascamorras marks the beginning of feria week. The annual feria is a very important event in every town's social calendar and Baza is no exception.

The feria (or fair) is not just a fairground with rides but also a meeting place for clubs and societies who erect marquees serving traditional fare and copious amounts of local sherry wine and beer. Additional stalls sell turron (a nougat-based confection), it churros and chocolate (something similar to doughnuts served with a chocolate sauce) and carnival trinkets. Other outdoor activities in Baza include swimming at the municipal pool, go-karting and tennis.

There is a good selection of restaurants in town (Chinese, Italian and, of course, traditional Spanish) and all bars offer free tapas with every alcoholic drink.

Owner profile

About the owner
Colin and Malutka Whiski are a middle aged couple from contrasting backgrounds. Colin was involved in the world of electronics and Malutka spent many years travelling the world with a touring theatre company. They bought their first Spanish property, in a white hill village twenty years ago. Since then they have bought and sold two more properties in Spain, each one in need of extensive restoration and modernisation. This has now become their passion. Their current project is a run down riad in Meknes, Morocco which they work on for a few months every year. Their frequent trips over to north Africa have enabled them to bring back Moroccan furniture and accessories with which to adorn their cave house in Baza.

Year purchased: 2002

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Colin and Malutka lived for several years in a remote farmhouse, 25 km from the nearest anything and with no electricity! Although they loved the beauty and tranquility of the Spanish countryside, they wanted to be closer to civilisation. The Baza cave house ticked all their boxes:- a centuries-old type of dwelling but with all the modern facilities of a town house; countryside directly behind it though only a 10-minute walk into the town centre; the sound of goat bells to be rear and church bells to the fore. Having spent five years restoring the cave house and adding many creative touches of their own they now want to share the magic of this wonderful dwelling.
