This is not a rural property with challenging access - you can walk to all the village's facilities. Although secluded and private, the villa is only 100 yards downhill from the village, with easy access but away from the noise during fiestas. And the 5-minute walk back from any of the five bar/restaurants in the village (maybe after a meal and several drinks) is downhill. Bedar was listed in a magazine as one of the top 20 places to live in Spain and it will appeal to those who want a taste of real Spanish life. The accommodation features a shaded front porch, huge lounge/dining room, large kitchen, 30 sq.m main bedroom, Moorish-style second double bedroom, open-plan study, plus a large top-floor studio with twin beds, double sofa bed and kitchen area. All bedrooms are en-suite. This is a 289sq.m villa with private terracing plus a vast 750sq.m of landscaped shared terracing and pool. Great for weddings or large parties. For your comfort, there is air-con in all rooms. Sky TV & Wi-fi.

Notes on accommodation
There is reverse air-conditioning in the lounge and all bedrooms, providing cooling in summer and heating in the colder months. Adult guests, particularly older guests, find our villa very comfortable, due to the large airy rooms, the air-conditioning and the first-floor bedrooms with high corniced ceilings, which are relatively cool in summer. The hardwood bed in the main bedroom has a 10" thick luxury king size mattress, and the other bedrooms have very comfortable beds. Young children love La Meseta, but are best supervised for safety reasons, as the terracing around the front garden is not fenced. Young children must be supervised around the pool, which is shared with only one other couple (who seldom use the pool and visit family in the UK in summer). Our villa is across the side road from the huge communal village pool, and a short walk from the village football park. The top floor rooms give children their own space, there are DVDs & games, and a new TV/DVD combi with USB etc.
Accessibility
Bedar is a hilly village, and there are some steps up to our pool, so our villa would not be the best choice for the infirm or the elderly. But older guests in good health have no problem at all - in fact the clear and dry Andalucian air seems to give them a new lease of life and they to relish walking surprising distances up and down the hills!
Outside
The front garden area comprises raised shrub and tree terraces. There are succulents and cacti on the walled bedding leading up to the house, and terracotta pots. The dining terrace on the ground floor has a wrought iron dining suite seating 4, with views to the almond valley below and the mountains. There is a size able rear terrace with additional seating and table, rotary clothes drier and a rear rockery. The large terrace on the first floor has a gas barbecue, dining suite for 6, and 4 sun-loungers with views to the valley, mountains and sea. There is also a small private shady garden terrace accessed from the stairs. In addition there is around 750sq.m (not a misprint!) of shared terracing (shared with one other villa). This is beautifully landscaped, with raised flower beds, terracotta flower pots, hibiscus, palm, fig and citrus trees, all set in local stone and brick, with stunning views to the sea - see our photo gallery. There is an 8 x 4 metre pool with more sun-loungers.
Coast/Beach
The beaches of Mojacar Playa, Vera and Garrucha are all within a 20 minute drive. Mojacar has several nice beaches, and Vera has a naturist beach. They are never mobbed. A drive along scenic and very quiet roads will take you to some of the finest and most secluded sandy beaches in Spain Around Carboneras. Further on in the nearby Cabo de Gata national park around Agua Amarga you will find spectacular scenery and enchanting little fishing villages with boats parked up on the beaches.
Golf
There are four golf courses within a 15 to 20 minute drive of the villa. The beautiful 9-hole course at Cortijo Grande is 15 minutes away; it was designed and built in the early '70s, dotted with orange and lemon groves which are watered from an underground volcanic lake. The setting and views of this valley are simply awesome, and the valley is a paradise for bird-watchers and walkers. The 18-hole golf courses of Marina Golf Mojacar, Valle De Este and the new Macenas Golf are all within a 20 minute drive. The superb and internationally renowned Desert Springs is a 25 minute drive away. It is Europe's only desert golf course, and regularly hosts large events. Sir Ian Botham has a home here and invites celebrities to his annual charity event at Desert Springs. Daley Thompson also has a home at Desert Springs.
There is also a driving range at Vera.
Skiing
Winter skiing is available on the Sierra Nevada mountains near Granada.
Travel
There are excellent transport and motorway links. Bedar is only 6 minutes' drive from Junction 520 of the major A-7 European motorway - the Autovia del Mediterraneo. Almeria airport is 45 minutes away. Murcia San Javier airport is an hour and quarter away via the stunning new AP-7 toll motorway.
Alicante airport is 2 hours away via the A-7 Mediterranean motorway.
All airports have a wide range of flights from chartered and budget airlines.
Distances
The coastal resorts of Garrucha and Mojacar are about 15 minutes' drive, where you can find tapas bars and restaurants including Seafood, Argentinian Steak Houses, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Belgian, French, Mexican plus chiringuitos (beach-side bars/restaurants). The ancient hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo (seen from the villa) is a must, with its narrow streets, great shops, music venues, cultural centre and Spanish restaurants. There are many other white villages to visit such as Nijar.
Further details
Bedar village has excellent facilities. There is a small supermarket, with a new one due soon, plus a bakery, a bank, a chemist, a hairdresser, a tobacconist and a gift shop. There is a small market on Wednesdays, and even a village brass band! There are 4 Spanish bar/restaurants in the village centre, all within a few hundred yards of our villa. The Miramar's whole leg of lamb cooked in local tomatoes and herbs is a must, especially when ordered with patatas a la pobre. They also offer a filling home-made 3-course menu del dia with wine for only 10 euros most days or nights.
Just up the hill from the villa is the Fuente Restaurant, near the water fountain, which is run by its New Yorker chef/owner Joseph. He grows his own fruit, vegetables and herbs in the restaurant garden, and makes everything from scratch including the dough for his pizzas and his ice cream. His pizzas start at 5.50 euros and bottles of wine from 7 euros.
There are many bars, restaurants and hotels in the area with entertainment. There are several entertainment bars on Mojacar Playa. There is a great rural bar near a goat farm at Los Marines village, 6 minutes' drive up the hill from Bedar, where there are music acts and jam sessions at weekends, with a variety of food from Moroccan tapas to steak and ale pie, and draught Guinness.
There is a naturist beach and water park at Vera, a marina and excellent go-karting at nearby Garrucha. The Mini-Hollywood theme park and zoo, where all the famous
spaghetti westerns were made, is about 45 minutes away at Tabernas, where you can also visit the famous olive oil centre. Granada and the Moorish Alhambra palaces are 2 hours away via motorway, and can be easily visited in a day.
The Cabo de Gato national park is a fantastic day out, with its idyllic fishing villages plus wonderful ceramic shops at Nijar. This is real Spain, there are fiestas just about every weekend during the summer - even in the smallest village has its own fiesta.

Our only regret about our holiday is that we don't own your house. Bill says you really are jammy beggars to have found this place !! Mrs P, Watford
Fantastic house in a fantastic location with fantastic views. We loved our wee walk up to the village of an evening for a drink or a meal, and we made several English and Spanish friends in our two weeks. Mr L,, Edinburgh
Back home in cold and wet Staffordshire, we just wanted to say what a wonderful time we had at your house in Bedar. The kids loved being up in the studio (away from mum and dad) and in the pool every day. Mr & Mrs S, Lancashire
Lovely house (and incredibly spacious), great garden and pool, fantastic views, wonderful village. And eating out was SOOOOOOO cheap ! We took your advice on bars and restaurants, and came back home with nearly half our spending money. Can we come back please? Mrs E, Strathaven
Owner profile
About the owner
My wife and I live in this Levante area of Almeria province in Andalucia. We moved here in 2006. After looking in several countries to buy a place in the sun, doing cruises and viewing trips, everywhere we fancied was either over-developed, or becoming over-developed. After visiting friends here in 2005, we finally found what we were looking for - an area of outstanding natural beauty, low-rise building, welcoming people, low-density population - and quiet roads! Before each rental, we prepare our house to the most meticulous standards for our guests, using our own 74 point checklist. We even de-crumb the toaster and clean out the kettle! Although we get a lot of return visitors, we love helping new guests discover the delights of the valley and the wonderfully scenic Levante area.
Year purchased: 2007
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We originally visited Bedar to dine at the famous Miramar restaurant, but walking round the village, everyone said "Hola" and we loved the character of the place, as all but one of the businesses are Spanish-run. Bedar was recently listed in a magazine as one of the top 20 places to live in Spain, and we wouldn't argue with that. There is a real buzz about the place, and there are regular dances and flamenco, plus three other music venues within a 5km drive. And there are the fiestas, when the village centre becomes a party venue and children are out having fun until the early hours. Bedar is only a few minutes from the main Mediterranean motorway, but it is tucked away on a hillside and a safe place to live. In fact, we think it may just be the best place in the world to live !
Unique benefits of the property
The Costa Almeria is completely unspoilt. You'll not find high-rise apartments in this area, and if you're a keen driver you'll love the quiet roads - not traffic light for miles.
Our villa is NOT a rural property requiring a car journey to get to the facilities. We can walk to all the village shops, bars and restaurants in less than five minutes from the villa. La Meseta is on a private road, shared with only two other owners (only one family live on-site, as the other only use their villa as a holiday home). There is vast terracing with wonderful views, and we have had many great parties.
In the villa will be our long list of places to go, good-value restaurants and tapas bars etc. We love this area, and we really enjoy helping our guests have the best possible time.
