Set in its own grounds of one acre, La Casa del Abuelo offers a unique holiday home in Andalucia. The house will accommodate 12/14 people, so would be suitable for a large group, or two families sharing. The setting is very rural, but access is easy. A car is necessary. The garden is bounded by two streams, and slopes down to where they meet in a wooded valley, perfect for a shady place to read, or for children’s adventures. Keen birdwatchers need go no further than the garden to see Azure winged magpies, Golden Orioles, Bee eaters, hoopoes to name but a few. imagine swimming in the pool and watching rabbits and hares on the hillside, or relaxing in the spa and listening to the nightingales. There is plenty of space to be together as a large group or find your own peaceful place in the courtyard, house or gardens. Local English speaking manager.

Notes on accommodation
The garden slopes down to two streams which are easily accessible, but in other parts the banks are very steep, making it unsuitable for children under 7.
Outside
There is a vine-covered courtyard, with tables and chairs, a veranda with dining furniture and gas barbecue overlooking the pool and garden. The garden has fruit and olive trees, and woods down by the stream provide cover for birds, including nightingales. The pool is 8x4m, unheated. Loungers beside pool. Cold shower on poolside. 2m diameter 6 person jacuzzi.
Coast/Beach
Beaches at the coast 95 mins, there is a sandy beach on the lake at Iznajar, a 10 min drive away.

Nearest golf course is at Antequera (30 min drive)New course, designed by Jose Maria Canizares. Spectacular setting.
Skiing
Nearest skiing in Sierra Nevada, 1 hr 15 mins drive.
Travel
1 hour drive from Malaga Airport. Car essential.
Distances
Fuente del Conde - 1.5kms - good bar, small supermarket, baker. Villanueva de Tapia 3 kms - bank, bars, shops, small market. Iznajar 10kms. Cordoba 1 hr 30 mins. Seville 2 hrs. Granada 1 hr.
Further details
The market towns of Loja and Archidona are within a 15 minute drive. Local bars provide simple, fresh local food.
The hotel at Iznajar—El Cortijo de Iznajar—serves an international menu, still based on local produce.
The Finca de la Bobadilla, an internationally renowned restaurant is a 15 minute drive away, for that special occasion.
The town of Iznajar commands views over the surrounding countryside— rolling hills clad with olive groves as far as the eye can see, and the lake –32 kms long and 6 kms wide. The lake provides opportunities for swimming, fishing and sailing.
The highlight of the Iznajar calendar, is La Feria Real (7th-11th September) in honour of the patron saint La Virgen de la Piedad. There is a candlelight procession through the town on the 8th September.
In a little over half an hour you could be in Antequera, a charming old town, commanding spectacular views of El Torcal National park, and across the surrounding plains.
Close to Antequera is El Torcal National Park, an area of majestic and fascinating limestone columns and formations, with marked walking trails.
For those with a taste for ancient history, Antequera is home to the most important dolmenic complex in Europe.
There is a golf course at the Antequera Golf Hotel.
A short drive to the west takes you to Fuente de Piedra, and its lake, with Spain’s only breeding colony of flamingos, as well as a multitude of other bird life.
The house is in the province of Cordoba, and the city of Cordoba is within easy reach, as is Granada. A little further away, a (about 2 hours drive) is Seville. The Sierra Nevada, with its opportunities for winter sports, are about 1hr 15 minutes drive.
Our local manager can arrange horse riding, and possibly fishing trips.

A 25% deposit is required, the balance payable 8 weeks prior to the start of your holiday.
A returnable security deposit of £200 will also be charged.
Owner profile
About the owner
We are an English couple who love Spain, both retired and spend several weeks a year at the house. We have two grown up offspring (one married) for whom it is also home from home, as we hope it will be for our guests. My interests are Barbershop singing with Bristol Fashion Chorus, reading, crosswords, plants, animals and birds. Phil's main interest is F1, and he is an armchair supporter of Sheffield Wednesday.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We love the rural setting - hearing the shepherd on the hill calling his flock as he walks around the hillsides finding new grazing for them - watching the birds in the garden and the rabbits and hares on the opposite hillside. It is quite magical to lie in the pool on a summer night and look up at the stars, undimmed by light pollution, and if we're lucky we see shooting stars. Unlike in some rural properties, the track to the house is just a few hundred yards from the road making access easy.
Unique benefits of the property
In the summer it's great to cool off in the pool, and the terraces around the pool are ideal for sunbathing. Spring and Autumn are best for visiting the Andalucian cities of Cordoba, Granada and Seville, and when it gets chilly there's a stock of olive wood to burn on the open fire.
