The view from Djebel Musa has been described as 'the best view we have seen in Spain' (CV Travel 2001). Our house is right on the edge of the white village of Gaucin, and our guest apartment - a romantic south-facing studio with its own balcony and private terraces - looks out over the garden and pool towards the same view but at a lower level. The private infinity pool, seldom used by me, is open year round and is reached by a short gravel path through the romantic Mediterranean garden (huge rocks, palms, bougainvilea, prickly pear etc) and is romantically set among rocks. Exceptional bird-watching locally and from our balcony! There is a broadband (radio) Internet connection, Satellite TV, DVD and an exceptionally comfortable huge English bed. Suitable for Winter lets - heating/central heating. Great walking area.We are officially recognised by Andalucian Tourist Board as a Casa Rural, number VTAR/MA/00607.We feature in '25 Beautiful Homes' August 07. See Conde Nast on Djebel Musa.

Outside
The studio has a balcony overlooking the garden with table and chairs (watch the vultures, booted eagles and golden eagles wheeling overhead! - this is an exceptionally good place for bird-watching - list available) and a few steps below, a private terraces with swing seat, umbrella, table and chairs and barbecue. From this terrace a few steps and a short path lead to the pool (no shallow end) from where one looks out over lovely wild countryside and the Genal valley (stunning almond blossom in Jan/Feb)and can see Gibraltar and, on clear days, North Africa. The pool is for the virtually exclusive use of clients (I seldom use it).
We have no near neighbours (other than on the street behind us) so we are very private and secluded. The pool area has sunbeds, sun umbrella, shower and a shaded area with table and chairs. A special feature of the pool is a small underwater ledge on which to stand at look out at Africa - the Rif Mountains are visible on clear days.
Coast/Beach
The Mediterranean coast (Costa del Sol) is 35 minutes' drive (beaches at Sabinillas, Duquesa, Estepona etc), the Atlantic coast (beaches near Tarifa) about 1.5 hours drive. Sotogrande Beach Club is about 1 hour. Most beaches have beach bars. Windsurfing (boards can be hired) at Tarifa.
Golf
Masses of golf courses on the Costa del Sol. Our nearest golf course is La Duquesa (about 40 minutes' drive). Also Valderrama and Guadalmina.
Travel
Malaga airport is 1.5/2 hours, and Gibraltar airport 1.25 hours. Some clients also fly to Jerez. We highly recommend car hire but some people do come here by public transport or taxi (cheaper to rent a car though!).
Distances
Approx 5 minutes walk to shops and restaurants. Ronda 1 hr, Estepona 50 minutes, Seville/Granada 2 1/2 - 3 hours, Gibraltar 1 1/4 hours. Distances to Puerto Banus, Marbella, San Pedro, Tarifa, Morocco (via Algeciras or Tarifa), Cadiz, Sotogrande
Further details
Although we are part of the village, we are right on the edge of it and therefore extremely private. Gaucin itself is one of the very attractive 'white villages' of the Serrania de Ronda. Other villages such as Casares, Jimena, Benaraba, Genalguacil are a short drive away, with Ronda itself slightly less than an hour away and the coast (swimming and golf) a bit closer. Perched below the ruins of a Moorish castle, at about 650m, Gaucin has marvellous views. Being one of the larger villages, it has more facilities than many villages - particularly in season. There are several restaurants, traditional tapas bars, a flamenco bar, a number of small food shops and an ATM. Everything is within walking distance. The streets are winding (we'll send you a map!), the pace is pretty slow and life is still relatively traditional for the local people here. The surrounding area is wonderful, with lots of small villages to explore, caves, bird-watching (particularly good), wild flowers in Spring, a bull run at Easter (not to everyone's taste perhaps but part of local culture), tennis, walking, riding, etc. Ronda (1 hour) is interesting historically but also has real charm in that it is the big town for the villages in the Serrania and the local people go there for everything they can't do locally. Further afield are the beaches of Estepona, the Atlantic coast, golf courses, Puerto Banus, Marbella and the historic cities of Sevilla and Granada.
Birds seen from the studio balcony include kites, hawks, vultures. Golden Eagles, Booted Eagles, Short-Toed Eagles, Bee-Eaters, Firecrests, Nightingale, Serin, kestrels, Pied Flycatcher, Spotted. Flycatcher, Honey Buzzards, Montagu Harriers, Willow Warbler, Sardinian Warbler, Subalpine Warbler, Sand Martin, Red Rumped Swallow, Goshawk, Hobby, Crag Martin, Alpine Swift etc etc.42 species seen from balcony end Sept 08,34 species seen from the balcony over a two week period in spring. Languages spoken: Spanish, French, English, little Danish

About the owner
I am a photographer. My late husband was a farmer in Dorset. I have lived much of my adult life in this country, my father having moved to Spain 1963. Although I am, obviously, an "ex pat", my knowledge of Spanish and my relationship with local community makes me more at home here than in any other country in which I have lived. My husband bought a small house in the village in the 70s and in 1985 we acquired the land on which Djebel Musa was subsequently built. The house was completed in 1996 and is named after the mountain in Morocco that we see from our terrace. Having spent some time in Morocco, the interior of the main part of the house has quite a strong Moroccan influence in its rugs, ceramics, tables, colours.
Year purchased: 1980's
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
Please refer to Owners Direct property S1235 (this is the site we use to advertise the house for the summer). Djebel Musa is a fairly traditional village house with its thick walls, iron grilles, cobbled entrance courtyard and Andalucian colours. In the studio you will look out over the wonderful Mediterranean garden, over the pool to North Africa. At night you will see the lights of Algeciras (on the coast), Gibraltar, and Morocco.
Unique benefits of the property
The house is possibly unique in being both in the village (it backs on to a narrow village street) with its small shops, restaurants and so on less than five minutes' walk away, with a feeling of being completely in the countryside since our land (part of which is a garden, part wild) extends a considerable way down the mountain in front, and some way on both sides. Virtually all houses in Gaucin have lovely views, but we believe ours to be quite exceptional. Not only do we have uninterrupted views to the Genal valley, Gibraltar, the Straits and Morocco (visible as I write this!!) but we have good views of both the Hacho and Crestallina mountains. Our clients make lists of birds they see from the terraces here (eagles, buzzards, vultures, bee-eaters) - please see main site S1235.
