Owner profile

Joshua Tree Monument, USA 2009

About the owner
I am a photographer. My late husband was a farmer in Dorset. I have lived much of my adult life in this country, my father having moved to Spain 1963. Although I am, obviously, an "ex pat", my knowledge of Spanish and my relationship with local community makes me more at home here than in any other country in which I have lived. My husband bought a small house in the village in the 70s and in 1985 we acquired the land on which Djebel Musa was subsequently built. The house was completed in 1996 and is named after the mountain in Morocco that we see from our terrace. Having spent some time in Morocco, the interior of the main part of the house has quite a strong Moroccan influence in its rugs, ceramics, tables, colours.

Year purchased: 1980's

Why the owner chose a home in this location
My late husband had a deep love for Gaucin and its people, dating back to his first visit here in the 1970s. On retirement, this is where he wanted to live. We moved to his original house (virtually next door) and built Djebel Musa - a larger, lighter house with a darkroom for me and lots of land (roughly two acres) for him on which to grow vegetables and flowers and shrubs and provide space for our adopted, abandoned dog Teddy to race around and bark. Neither my husband nor Teddy have survived, but the house is a happy one with the special atmosphere that houses can have when the occupants have been happy people. As regards the location, the view was described by CV Travel as "the best view we have seen in Spain"; it is in truth quite exceptional.

Unique benefits of the property
The house is built on approximately two acres of land: scrub, rocky outcrops, prickly pears, almond and carob trees, with a terraced garden that includes an infinity pool cantilevered out over this beautiful, wild countryside. The land extends down the mountainside further than the eye can see. From the terrace you will see eagles and other raptors, hear donkeys and sheep. We have made it as low profile and appropriate to the village as possible, aware that it will outlive us. We think we have created something magical. More, even, than the sum of its parts. Being in, but not really part of, the village means that one has the impression of being in the country. The village is on our doorstep, but only the backdoor! Incidentally, the piano is tuned annually, but let us know if you play.
