News for June 2011!!! A new bar has just opened in the village - so you now have a chice! The new bar is at the top of the village, so if you are taking a look at La Murtana, where they make meringues, sweets, local fig cakes and the like - why not stop off and have a cool refreshment at our new bar? The small village of Murtas has a popular traditional friendly bar/restaurant, where free tapas are served with your drinks and excellent traditional meals and local wines are served daily. Five minutes drive from the village, the Bodega Cuatro Vientos, offers excellent wines and local traditional fare. There are few local shops - the bakers is just around the corner from Casa Peca, and there a a butcher, general store and chemist and the local fishmonger and fruiterer visit the village every week with the local produce sold from their trucks - very popular with the locals! The bank is situated in the Church Square, 2 minutes from your accommodation.
The large village pool is open to all in the months of July and August. There is also a small pool for children. All are welcome!
There are two main fiestas in Murtas - Santa Cruz at the beginning of May and San Miguel (patron Saint of the Village) the 29th September. Festivities take place over the weekend on both occasions, and include religious processions, local bands, fireworks, evening music and dancing including the local traditional culture of "Trovo" and activities especially for children, not forgetting traditional fiesta cooking "al fresco" within the square for all.

About the owner
Having spent many years working in Spain and then travelling there with my husband, we finally decided to buy our village house as we had found a part of the real Spain far from the madding crowds. We hope that you will enjoy it as much as we do and relax on the terrace having a BBQ and soaking up the sun. We spend as much time there as possible and are discovering new places and learning about the customs and traditions on each visit. Our son loves to visit in the winter as he enjoys the skiing in Sierra Nevada (about 2.5 hrs away) and our daughter prefers the spring and summer to practice snorkeling at the coast (35 mins drive to the nearest). Having such friendly neighbours to look after you and help with any local knowledge will make your stay even more relaxing. Enjoy!

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Murtas appealed to us from the very first visit - it's setting on the slopes overlooking the Sierra Gador and the Med was quite stunning, especially on a clear day. The rural way of life and quaint narrow streets with mules passing by your window was fascinating. Although off the beaten track, you have the choice of skiing within a couple of hours, the beautiful city of Granada just and hour and a half away or swimming and snorkeling just 35 mins from the village - Fiestas are a real treat in May - Santa Cruz and September - San Miguel and a good way to get to know the village customs! Music, dancing, singing, paella and plenty of local wines and beers - great fun!
Unique benefits of the property
Ideally situated for walking, bird watching or nature lovers - or even just relaxing taking in the views, sunshine and having a BBQ on the roof terrace. As you are in the heart of the village, there is no need to drive to enjoy a drink, tapas or a meal - visit the Bar El Pinche where Antonio will be pleased to welcome you. You can walk the couple of miles to the highest vineyard in Spain to sample very good wines and local produce and spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada at Quatro Vientos (four winds).
