View of House from garden

The spacious garden with its ancient vines, shrubs and citrus trees has dining and barbecue areas with plenty of room for sunbathing or sitting under the shade of the vines. A friendly shop is just around the corner and there is also a bar which serves good food. You can stroll along the river where you can see a variety of water birds, both resident, and summer visitors from Africa, or, walk in the woods and hills and you will find some of the most splendid panoramic views of the area. San Miguel is in the Rias Baixas wine growing region and the house is very close to the famous Santiago Ruiz bodega which produces the rather special white O Rosal wine. There is a small museum of wine making in the bodega which is well worth a visit. Delicious Albarino wines can be sampled at the many local bodegas. Coast/Beach
Within 10 minutes drive of the river beach at Eiras, (warmer than the sea) the large estuary beach at Camposancos or the smaller beaches of Praia Area Grande in A Guarda. 30 minutes drive will take you to Praia America and the other popular beaches of Baiona or, in the other direction, to the Portuguese beaches. All are well served with restaurants/bars.

Travel
Oporto airport in Portugal is just over an hours drive. Ryanair or T.A.P both provide a good service. Santiago de Compostella is about 2 hours, also served by Ryanair. Vigo is only 45 minutes drive - served by Clickair (now called Vueling an offshoot of Iberia) in the summer months.

Distances
The nearest town is La Guardia a 10 minute drive. From there, up the coast to Baiona takes about 20 minutes. Heading up-river, the old town of Tui with its cathedral and old city walls is also a 20 minute drive. Vigo is the largest city in Galicia a 45 minute drive. The cathedral city of Santiago is 1½ hours away and well worth a visit. A 10 minute drive can take you across to Portugal to browse the large outdoor markets of Villa Nova de Ceveira, Camina. Valenca and Barcelos.

Further details
This is a perfect spot from which to explore both Galicia and Northern Portugal.
In La Guardia you can shop, eat at the waterfront restaurants and visit Monte Tecla with its Celtic / Roman excavated settlement and museum. From the summit there are stunning views of the estuary and white beaches stretching into the distance; and there are bar/restaurants where you can relax and enjoy the view with a drink and tapas.

Take a picnic and explore the water mills on the rivers Folon and Picon. You can take the ocean route to Baiona and return over the picturesque mountains. Alternatively, take the ferry or drive over the friendship bridge to Portugal to browse the markets of Vila Nova de Ceveira or Caminha and continue down the Portuguese coast to explore the fishing ports and beaches. The town of Viana do Castello is worth a visit and in Porto there are yet more delicious fish restaurants along the river.
Summer is a time of celebration and many towns and villages host a food or wine fiesta. From the lobster fiesta in La Guardia in June, the wine fiesta in O Rosal in July to the jamon fiesta in A Caniza in August and the seafood fiesta in O Grove in September, food and wine is celebrated somewhere in the area every week.
Bicycles and canoes can be hired just down the road.

Regular bus service half-hourly from the village to La Guardia, Tui, Vigo, Baiona etc. Trains from Guillarei in Tui and Vila Nova de Ceveira.

Beautiful house, inspirational garden. This is life as it should be lived! Fiona Edinburgh.

If I could choose my dream house, this would be it and the garden is magical. Chaitanya, Bristol.

Kayaking up the Tamuxe was a highlight!. Helen & Luke, Kent.

Another beautiful week in Galicia full of sunshine, good company and good food. We will be back. Jennie and Peter, Cornwall.

Without your help we wouldn't have found half the cool places we did, the horse round-up, swimming at the waterfall in the mountains, wine tasting, the amazing restaurants and brilliant beaches. The Harrisons.

Fabulous holiday! With three children under five, the beaches you recommended at Eiras, A Guarda and Anchora were great. Toby & Helena, Madrid.

Owner profile

About the owner
Having both spent many years living in West Wales and working variously as smallholders, market gardeners, decorators and wood workers, it was time for a change. Our children were grown up with lives of their own so we set off on a voyage of discovery. It was 2002 when we left to walk the Camino de Santiago, the ancient pilgrimage crossing the north of Spain and ending in Santiago de Compostela. For several weeks we walked across the mountains and plains; drinking in the scenery and stunned by the power and beauty of the country. In the final stages of the journey we climbed the last range of mountains and into Galicia. It felt like coming home.

Year purchased: 2004

Why the owner chose a home in this location
From that point on, we directed everything towards moving here. In 2004 we sold up in Wales and combined forces to buy a barely habitable house with a tumbledown barn and overgrown jungle of a vineyard in the small village of San Miguel. After some years of renovation we can now offer the original four bedroomed house for rent. The vineyard has developed into a garden with many different places to sit and new things around every twist of the path. We are available daily to help arrange activities such as kayaking, white-water rafting, trips to the Isles de Cies etc. or to provide directions to some of the 'hidden gems'.

Unique benefits of the property
The people of the area are friendly and proud of their Galician heritage. Traditional Galician music and dancing are represented at all the local fiestas.
