The apartments are in our own lovingly restored town house which is located right at the heart of the Arabic quarter with its ancient historic buildings and cobbled winding streets. The apartments have been designed as romantic hideaways where you can get away from it all, yet have access to lively bars, and shops. From the terraces you can watch the light change over the olive groves, see the farmer plough his field, the goatherd drive his animals home and spot many birds of prey. Summer evenings bring spectacular shows of shooting stars. In a few minutes you can walk to the magnificent gorge with its ruined flour mills and abundance of flora and fauna. Five minutes brings you to two traditional squares surrounded by lively bars where the tapas are still free and top quality Rioja is served. A short drive takes you to the hot springs after which the town is named. Swimming can be in the local pool or at Lake Bermajales only a 15 minute drive away. An artist's and writer's paradise.

The living space has a sofa bed, dining table and chairs and a wood burning stove for when the evenings are cool.
The luxurious bathroom is tiled with limestone. There is a spacious shower, double sinks and a huge bath big enough for two- perfect for a romantic weekend or honeymoon. From the bath you can lie back and look out over the landscape.
Leading from the living room with its sofa bed, DVD player and selections of DVDs and music, there is a fully equipped modern studio kitchen with halogen hob, sink and fridge. This apartment is traditionally furnished in a Moroccan Deco/Andalusian style. It has a lovely bedroom with terracotta tiles and beamed ceiling. It has an antique iron double bed painted blue. There is a wardrobe space and a beautiful turquoise wet room. The room opens up onto a blue shuttered small balcony from which you can see the bell tower of the church Santa Maria.
An arch leads to a living room with a beamed ceiling and terracotta floor. A pretty feature is an alcove curtained day bed which turns into an extra single sleeping area at night. There is a red art deco sofa next to the wood burning stove. There's a DVD player with DVDs and ipod docker. Blue shutters lead to another small balcony at the front of the house. At the back is a blue tiled Andalusian kitchen with sink, hob, fridge and table and chairs. This leads out onto a spacious terrace with great views. The sun filled patio is furnished with table, chairs, sun loungers and a barbecue.

Carmen is a ground floor apartment which opens out onto a lovely secluded garden with a huge terrace for outdoor dining and sunbathing. A Spanish kitchen is crammed with pots and pans and spices along with Spanish and Moroccan cookery books so you can try your hand at some local dishes. The living room/library has over a 1000 books. It is cool in summer and warm in the cooler months with a huge wood burner- ideal for snuggling up with a book. There is a DVD player with DVDs and CDs. There's an ipod docker for your own tunes too. Both kitchen and living room have French doors leading out to a spacious terrace with table, chairs and sunloungers. The garden is scented by roses, honeysuckle and jasmine and a tinkling fountain gives it a Moroccan courtyard feel. Downstairs is also a bright wet room. Upstairs an airy bedroom has a king sized bed and sitting area. It has great views and a cute wood burner for winter nights.

Notes on accommodation
All three apartments have a wood burning stove for getting cosy in the winter. The first basket of logs is provided and further logs can be purchased at cost from the key holders. Fans are provided in the summer and all electricity and gas is included in the costs. All apartments have a DVD player and selection of films and music. While fine for babies and older children, Lorca and Cervantes are not ideal for active toddlers because of the stairs. Carmen is fine, although there is a drop from the terrace to the courtyard.

Accessibility
Lorca is on the second floor up a wide flight of stairs and Cervantes is on the first floor and the stairs are steep and narrow. Carmen is on the ground floor but the bedroom is on the first floor. There are a couple of steps (one deep) from level to level in Carmen.

Outside
Lorca has a sunny balcony with table and chairs. There are stunning views over the countryside. A tiny barbecue allows you to make the most of the outside space. Cervantes has a large patio with table, chairs, sun loungers and a barbecue. This too has lovely views. Carmen has a beautiful sunny secluded garden with roses, honeysuckle and jasmine. It is shaded by an apple tree and a fig tree and the air is freshened by a little fountain. It has a table and chairs and sunloungers.

Coast/Beach
It is about one hour drive to the beach at Torre del Mar and a little further to the beaches at Nerja, La Herradura and Almunecar. We have found a perfect little bay near Almunecar. It is a sheltered cove with a coarse sand beach and crystal clear water.

Skiing
Skiing, snowboarding and sledging is available at the Sierra Nevada resort of Solynieve which is about an hour and a half drive away. The season is usually December to April depending on the snowfall.

Special interest holidays
The owners are a photographer and a writer. We can arrange artist's and writer's retreats and book club holidays all year round.
We can also arrange for cycling, walking and a range of outdoor pursuits such as kayaking, quad biking and horse riding. The area is ideal for birdwatching and many different birds have been spotted from our terraces. The local countryside with its diverse wildlife is ideal for nature lovers.

Travel
Malaga airport is about an hour and twenty minutes away and pick up can be arranged for 75 euros each way although we recommend a car. However, many of our guests have not hired a car and managed well enough without one. Alhama has everything you need and Granada and Malaga are accessible by bus.

Distances
The magnificent city of Granada is about one hour away. Here you can visit the world famous Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens, explore the Moorish quarter of Albacain with its maze of Moroccan bazaars or take in a Flamenco show in the cave district of Sacramonte. The city of Malaga is well worth a visit and the Picasso museum often has some great exhibitions.
The market town of Loja is about 30 minutes away and Seville and Cordoba about 2 hours- (public transport available.)

Further details
Alhama has everything you need for a short or long stay and you don't need a car unless you want to go further afield. We have a 'secret supermarket' a few doors away and there are bigger shops in the town. Fish shops and butchers cater for all your needs and the weekly market on Friday sells everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothes and shoes- all at bargain prices.
There is a municipal swimming pool with a lovely shaded grass area and a bar offering cold drinks and snacks. The hotel Pato Loco 2 miles away has a very large pool open to the public. The pools cost €2/€3.50 per adult to get in. Both Pato Loco and Ventorro, the restaurant next door, do great Sunday lunch. The garlic chicken and the trout at Ventorro are particularly recommended. Ventorro also has a wonderful Arabic spa bath built into caves. It has a jacuzzi, steam room and cold plunge as well as the warm main pool. Entrance is 12 euros and half price on Tuesday. You can even have a massage for 15 euros! The hotel Balneario also offers a range of spa treatments. This hotel is built at the Roman hot springs, but if you don't want to go to the hotel you can do as the locals do and bathe in the warm pools that flow into the river from the springs.
A short drive takes you to the Lake Bermajales where you can swim, windsurf, kayak or simply picnic on one of the benches under the pines.
One of the best thing about Alhama is the bars- we haven't counted them, but still haven't been in them all. All have their own typically Spanish style and offer free tapas with every drink. These range from Prawns in Garlic to Roast Pork, Jamon Serrano and battered Aubergines. With a good glass of Rioja costing €1.50 you can have a very reasonable holiday indeed.
If you want something more substantial there are several restaurants to cater for your needs.
If you want to experience real Spain why not come for the February Carnival or one of the many ferias and fiestas.

Owner profile

About the owner
I am a teacher of English Literature and a writer, John is a Gardner and photographer. We have both found creative inspiration living and staying at the house. Our interests are reflected in the house. There are 1000 books in our specially built library in Carmen. These range from crime novels, to poetry, from art and photography books to travel guides. All the apartments also have a range of books. There is original art and photography everywhere.

Why the owner chose a guest house in this location
We bought the house four years ago and have spent this time lovingly restoring it. When we bought the house it needed lots of work to bring it to guest standard- there was even an ostrich living in the garden. This gave the house its name- Carmen de Pepita- the garden of Pepita. Pepita has gone to 'the campo' now, but the garden flourishes on what she left behind. We fell in love with the house because of the fantastic views (I think the best rented property in Alhama for views.) We fell in love with Alhama for its beauty, the friendliness of the people and the lively tapas bars. The whole place is full of life and yet at the same time really restorative. It's truly magical and everyone who stays says the same.

Unique benefits of the property
The house looks out over the most stunning countryside and yet it is at the heart of an ancient and very historic town. A little local shop is round the corner and Pedro speaks good English and stocks just about everything. The house is very peaceful and tranquil and you feel really close to nature without being in a remote location. There are more bars than I have counted within 5-10 minutes walk and almost all of them serve free tapas with every drink. The tapas are fantastic quality and the wine is also of great quality. The Friday market is a short walk away and sells a variety of produce grown in the region. Fresh healthy food on the doorstep. For artists and photographers the light is lovely- always changing and there are some great picture opportunities.
