Notes on accommodation
Only the master bedroom, on the first floor, is air-conditioned. The central heating takes the form of underfloor heating in the living areas and kitchen only. The property is ideal for children who are able to swim unsupervised, but not for young children who are non-swimmers. This is because the pool is a courtyard pool that has no separate safety fence, although there is a pool net available on request.
Outside
The property is situated in a large fenced garden with a separate barbecue (braai) area. A spectacular, private, architect-designed (30' by 14') swimming pool is linked to the house in a walled courtyard.
Coast/Beach
Phitides Walk is situated within a short walk (200m) from the family-friendly swimming beaches of the Keurbooms River estuary. Lookout beach, one of the principal swimming and whale watching beaches of the area, was very easily accessible but this beach was washed away in floods in December 2007). It is expected that the beach will reform in time. The other Plettenberg Bay beaches (Middle Beach and Robberg Beach) are within 5km the property.
Golf
The property is well located for golfers being situated about 3 kilometres of the Goose Valley course (designed by Gary Player) and about 5 kilometres from the excellent Plettenberg Bay Country Club course. There are several other world-class courses with easy reach including Pezula (Sparrebosch) in Knysna (about 35 kilometres), several specacular courses in the George area including the Fancourt courses, the George Golf Club, Pinnacle Point in Mossel Bay and the Ernie Els- designed Oubaai Golf Course (all within 100-150 kilometres)
Travel
SAA, SA Air Express, Kulula and other domestic carriers operate regular scheduled flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to George and Port Elizabeth airports. Plettenberg Bay Airport is currently open only to private aircraft. A taxi service operates between George to Plettenberg Bay. Most visitors will hire a car and drive themselves, taking in the specacular scenery of the Garden Route en route. Distances to George are about 100 kilometres and to PE about 235 kilometres.
Distances
Phitides Walk is within a kilometre of the centre of Plettenberg Bay at the heart of the Garden Route. Plettenberg Bay is located 35 kilometres from Knysna and about 100 kilometres from George and 235 kilometres from Port Elizabeth. The property is about 0.5 kilometres from a shopping centre on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay. This gives easy access to a supermarket, restaurants, banks and many other shops. Notwithstanding this proximity the property remains unaffected by traffic or noise.
Further details
Plettenberg Bay is located in an area of exceptional natural beauty. The bay is demarcated to the West by the Robberg penisular (itself a nature reserve and a walker's paradise) and by the Tsitsikama mountain range to the East, which give a spectacular backdrop to the views across the bay.
The area offers all the sporting activities one would expect of one of South Africa's premier beach holiday areas such as surfing, wind and kite surfing, scuba diving and snorkelling (there is an underwater snorkelling trail at Stroms River), sea kyaking, deepsea and surf/rock fishing, golf, tennis etc. but also offers some more special activities-
* This is one of South Africa's best whale watching areas. In season whales may be seen close in to the Lookout and Robberg beaches and may be viewed from the sea for much of the year.
* The Shamwari Game and Baviaanskloof game reserves (both malaria free) are within easy reach.
* Plettenberg Bay is a major polo centre and many of the world's leading players compete there.
* Numerous adventure activities are available in the area including forest canopy walking, abseiling, bungy jumping, tubing (canyoning) on the Storms River, mountain biking in the Hakerville forests.
* Exceptional coastal and inland hiking (e.g. the Dolphin and Otter Trails).
* Boat trips will take you 7 kilometres up the Keurbooms River through spectacular gorges and primeval forests.
* A visit to the Monkeyland primate sanctuary is very worthwhile.
