Notes on accommodation
Accommodation was built as the exciseman's house in Port Charlotte village. Built in 1890 it provides wonderful views of the Loch Indaal and over to the Antrim coast, and enjoys a quiet location on the edge of the village, within easy reach of local amenities. The spacious rooms offer a happy base for our guests, who may wish to enjoy the island's peace, tranquility, wildlife, walking and many varied beaches, with beautiful views to the neighbouring islands of Jura, Oronsay, Colonsay and Mull. Wifi now available.
Accessibility
The property is not suited to wheelchair users, with two steps up from the road to entrance pathway, one step up into porch, and with bedrooms in the upper floor. However there are toilet and shower facilities at ground floor level, and the folding bed could be placed in the dining or sitting room for ease of access. Corridors and doors are wide so offer ease of movement at ground floor level. Advice and guidance available on request.
Outside
The rear garden is large and grassed, sloping up towards the rear dry stane dyke, with sunsets from the west. Look out for highland cattle in the field behind. The front walled garden is sunny, sheltered and overlooks the loch and faces south to Ireland. A garden bench is available in the front garden and four folding outdoor chairs are also available for garden and picnic use. The garden locations are suitable for disposable barbecues. Two adult cycles are available in the garage, along with a gas barbecue unit for your use. Storage available for guest cycles as needed.
Coast/Beach
The property is situated on the coast, with two sandy beaches within walking distance, overlooked by a lighthouse, a small pier suitable for fishing, and a rocky shoreline suitable for exploring rock pools.
Golf
The Machrie Golf Course is situated some 10 miles round the loch from the house. Having once played host to the Open in the late 19th Century, it is a classic links course, short but very challenging. The course was ranked as one of the top fifty in the UK by a monthly golf magazine. The Machrie Hotel has been recently bought over, and will offer further facilities for guests of the Old Police House.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Islay is Susie's home island, Port Charlotte the prettiest village! Spend some time away from it all, but within easy walking distance of local facilities. We love the area for the people, walking, entertainment and to enjoy the light and natural beauty of the village and island. Day trips to Colonsay, Oronsay and to Jura are possible, and the exploration of Islay's Distilleries provides much pleasure! Horse riding, fishing trips, swimming are just some of the activities we enjoy, in addition to breakfast in bed with a spectacular view of the sea and sky. The Aberdeen city flat offers guests the opportunity to stay in a well maintained quiet location, very convenient for city and surrounding countryside.
