The Wolery was built by the owners in the 1970s as a holiday home and was the family home until recently. The site was chosen because of the fantastic view across the Solway to the hills of the lake district. The cottage was named because of the barn owls that frequent the glen. The glen is dotted with small farms but feels very wild and there is no shortage of wildlife - with deer, red squirrels, buzzards and woodpeckers all common. The ancient Southwick Kirkyard is a short walk up the lane and the shoreline below the glen is owned and managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. The cottage is comfortable - cosy in winter and very light and sunny in summer, with the views from the south-facing windows always changing. The Solway coast is the forgotten corner of Scotland - rich in heritage but ignored by most tourists, it is an ideal area to relax in - lots of walks to do, wild coasts to explore, hills to climb and lots of galleries, studios and craftshops to visit.
