Outside
Dunbars Close Garden is open to residents every day until sunset. This walled garden is an oasis of tranquillity, a place to pause, away from the bustle of the Royal Mile, a good picnic spot. It was created by the Mushroom Trust in the 1970s to emulate a 17th century herb garden where thyme, bay trees and a variety of other herbs, grow happily in traditional 'knots' and enclosures finished with topiary. Calton Hill rises above the garden. A lane - Jacob's Ladder - leads up towards it, with superb views over the Old Town, and on to Princes Street. The East End of Princes Street can be reached in 10 minutes. Calton Hill and the Royal Park with Arthur's Seat provide exceptional opportunities for walking and other sports.
Coast/Beach
Portobello sands are 15 minutes by bus or car from Dunbars Close. The stunning East Lothian coastline, with its white sand beaches, that runs from Aberlady to North Berwick (and beyond to Dunbar) can be reached in 40 minutes. Buses and trains run regularly. The Forth Bridge is a few minutes by train from Waverley Station. The historic town of South Queensferry (where the bridge was constructed in the 19th century) makes a great outing. On the other side of the bridge is Deep Sea World.
Golf
Edinburgh is famously home to many golf courses. Others are within easy reach, such as Dalmahoy, Gullane and Greywalls.
Skiing
Hillend Ski Training course is 20 minutes by car from the city centre.
Travel
Edinburgh airport is 30 minutes by car, bus or taxi from the city centre. Airport buses run every 15 minutes; No.35 bus from the airport bus stops at Dunbars Close! Edinburgh has one of the best public bus services in Europe and a car is not necessary in the city centre. A car can be hired for trips. Waverely Station is 10 minutes walk from the flat. Waverely Station is within walking distance and the Bus Station is 5 minutes from Waverely.
