Sadly - none of the apartments is suitable for wheelchair access due to the historic layout - there are steps down to the gardens and steps up to the Park and Balfour Apartments, and narrow paths around the gardens. Pilrig House is an A-listed building and cannot be altered. If you have minor mobility problems, the steps referred to total around 10 up to the main-door apartment and around 8 down to the garden apartment - around 30 up to the Balfour Apartment.

Guests can enjoy the private gardens to the front overlooking the park, plus there is the added bonus of a quiet Regency garden to the side of the house, which has more secluded seating areas and is teeming with birds, squirrels, and the resident fox, who occasionally puts in an appearance! This is a lovely sunny, quiet spot, which has garden seats. The park - right on your doorstep - is quiet and used mostly by dog-walkers and joggers, and has several entrances - you can awaken and take an early morning jog should the urge take you! The nearest bus-stop is a mere few minutes' walk through the park.

Nearby are excellent restaurants, local shops, supermarket and food stores, bus-stops, gym/swim centre.

‘ ... and besides, Pilrig being in the country, I made bold to find the way to it myself, with the help of my two legs and a Scots tongue... ...I came in view of Pilrig, a pleasant gabled house set by the walk side among some brave young woods.' Robert Louis Stevenson, Catriona

Coast/Beach
There are many delightful sandy beaches along the East Lothian coastline (great golf-course country!), around an hour's drive from the apartment. A car hire is handy for places out with Edinburgh, but, if staying 3/4 nights and sightseeing in Edinburgh, car hire is not necessary. We would advise guests that Edinburgh is a very compact city, easily accessible on foot. We also provide up-to-date details of local tour companies that specialise in half-day, 1-day and 2-day tours at reasonable prices

St Andrews Old Course is around an hour-and-a-half's drive from Edinburgh. Turnberry and Carnoustie are both around 2 hours' drive away. Guest comments
Debbie and Philip, Our vacation to England, Wales, Scotland and France was just wonderful. We stayed in 7 different establishments, from hotels to cottages to apartments to flats. Most were OK, and one or two were just satisfactory. However, one stood out as exquisite, that was Pilrig House. Please accept our highest praise for a lovely apartment, clean, beautifully decorated, comfortable beds, wonderful park setting etc., etc. Also our thanks to both of you for your kindness and help in making our Edinburgh stay perfect. While this was our first European experience with a rental of this type, we have rented many times in the US, and Pilrig ranks tops with us. Our very best to both of you and thanks again. Warmest Regards. Carolyn and Jim Eitel

Owner profile

Debbie & Philip - wedding day at Pilrig House

About the owner
Philip and I got married 5 years ago - here we are on the steps of Pilrig House after the wedding...on the steps to the Park Apartment. Golden oldies. Philip is a retired mechanical engineer, who travelled the world as a naval engineer for many years - living in Mexico and Belize for periods of time. He is an amateur historian, and has amazing local and Scottish historical knowledge... and, is also a keen 'treasure hunter' - goes off frequently to local sites with his metal detector. I am an ex-copy editor who worked for over 20 years in the field of publishing, and then on a freelance basis as an editor/proofreader. We both enjoy travel, books, films and, life in general. We decided that we couldn't bear to sell Philip's apartment in Pilrig House, and so the holiday lets evolved.

Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
Well - there's the fact the Pilrig House is utterly unique as an historic 17th-century Scottish townhouse in Edinburgh - with its incredible history! Then there's the lovely location, and the parkland and Edinburgh skyline views... And the peace is supreme! Then, there's the wonderful ambiance in the house itself - it really is special. And, the private parking, the beautiful gardens... there is so much to enjoy about living here. We just couldn't replicate what Pilrig House offers if we searched the length and breadth of Edinburgh. And the fact that we can walk into the centre of Edinburgh in 15 mins, or take a bus right outside the park... more than anything, we love the feeling of living in the country, with nature on our doorstep, while living so close to the city centre.

Unique benefits of the property
All of the above! We awaken to birdsong, can gaze out our windows and see the park in all seasons in all its beauty, or sit in the garden to the side of the house in total privacy and enjoy the tranquillity, and read a book... We often walk down to the Port of Leith - only a 10-minute walk from Pilrig House and now a fashionable dining spot with Edinburgh residents, where there are great restaurants, including Martin Wishart's and Kitchins (two Michelin-star restaurants) right on the waterfront, and grab a bite to eat. Everything we need is close-by - shops, transport links, restaurants (2 within mins), Edinburgh's main train station... and, there are beautiful drives to the East Lothian countryside and coastal trail, including some charming villages - within a half-hour's drive.
