On arrival, Philip and Debbie, the owners, personally extend a warm welcome to all guests. They are also on-hand throughout your stay and are happy to offer advice and assistance, if required.

Accessibility
None of the apartments is suitable for wheelchair access due to the historic layout - there are steps down to the gardens and steps up to the Park and Balfour Apartments, and narrow paths around the gardens. Pilrig House is an A-listed building and cannot be altered. If you have minor mobility problems, the steps referred to total around 10 up to the main-door apartment, and around 8 down to the garden apartment - around 30 up to the Balfour Apartment.

Outside
Guests can enjoy the private gardens to the front overlooking the park, plus there is the added bonus of a quiet Regency garden to the side of the house, which has more secluded seating areas and is teeming with birds, squirrels, and the resident fox, who occasionally puts in an appearance! This is a lovely sunny, quiet spot, which has garden seats. The park has two swing-parks in it and is generally quiet and used mostly by dog-walkers and joggers, and has several entrances. The nearest bus-stop is a mere few minutes' walk through the park.

Coast/Beach
There are many delightful sandy beaches along the East Lothian coastline (great golf-course country!), around an hour's drive from the apartment. A car hire is handy for places out with Edinburgh, but, if staying 3/4 nights and sightseeing in Edinburgh, car hire is not necessary. We would advise guests that Edinburgh is a very compact city, easily accessible on foot. We also provide up-to-date details of local tour companies that specialise in half-day, 1-day and 2-day tours at reasonable prices

Golf
St Andrews Old Course is around an hour-and-a-half's drive from Edinburgh. Turnberry and Carnoustie are both around 2 hours' drive away. East Lothian has many golf-courses, including: Gullane, Muirfield (where the Open is often held) & North Berwick. A whole host of other famous Scottish golf-courses can be reached within a few hours by train or car, eg Troon, Gleneagles.

Leith Links, less than one mile from Pilrig House, is famous for establishing the first recognised rules of golf: 'Leith Rules'!

Travel
Edinburgh Airport is around 12 miles from Pilrig House. A taxi from the airport would cost in the region of £22. Alternatively, guests can hop on one of the Airport's 'shuttle' buses, which will take them into the centre of Edinburgh - from there, a taxi to the house would cost around £5. Glasgow Airport is around 35 miles away - a city link bus will take guests from Glasgow Airport to Edinburgh city centre. Edinburgh's Waverley Station is just off Princes Street - taxi to house - c. £5.

Distances
Edinburgh is around 35 miles from the city of Glasgow - trains go there every 15 minutes from Edinburgh's Waverley Train Station. It is also near to the coastal trail of East Lothian, where there are many picturesque villages: North Berwick, Gullane, Gifford, Dirlton. Guests may wish to visit the Borders, Fife, St Andrews, Stirling - 1-2 hours' drive. Lindisfarne is around an hour-and-a-half's drive from Edinburgh. There are many coach tours to the stunning Highlands of Scotland.

Further details

The house is one mile exactly from Princes Street - guests can walk there in 15 minutes, and perhaps visit the The National Gallery, or the Portrait Gallery, or just do a spot of shopping in Jenners - Edinburgh's oldest store. The 'Royal Mile' is around 20 minutes' walk away - Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace and Park, The Scottish Parliament, and a whole host of attractions can be found wandering down the High Street! Local food shops, restaurants, post office and banks are all very close to the house. And, guests can enjoy the fact that there is a private mail-box to the rear of the house for sending postcards, etc. Pilrig House is around 15 minutes' walk from Edinburgh Botanical Gardens, and is minutes away from the Water of Leith Walkways - a network of walkways/cyclepaths that run alngside the river, leading to a myriad of areas throughout Edinburgh, including the 'village' of Stockbridge, and Edinburgh's 'New Town'.

Guest comments
Debbie and Philip, Our vacation to England, Wales, Scotland and France was just wonderful. We stayed in 7 different establishments, from hotels to cottages to apartments to flats. Most were OK, and one or two were just satisfactory. However, one stood out as exquisite, that was Pilrig House. Please accept our highest praise for a lovely apartment, clean, beautifully decorated, comfortable beds, wonderful park setting etc., etc. Also our thanks to both of you for your kindness and help in making our Edinburgh stay perfect. While this was our first European experience with a rental of this type, we have rented many times in the US, and Pilrig ranks tops with us. Our very best to both of you and thanks again. Warmest Regards. Carolyn and Jim Eitel
