Luxury Cottage with Fantastic Sea Views
Fantastic Location in Highland Village Surrounded by Golden Beaches and Rolling Mountains
Sleeps 6 (3 Bedrooms)

The central location allows the peace and solitude, so rare to so many, but with easy access to local restaurants, shops and tourist attractions. The cottage is so fantastic you will be reluctant to leave it, and the unique area is unforgettable. Durness lies in the county of Sutherland on the North West tip of Great Britain in the wild remote and beautiful expanse of Cape Wrath and enjoys one of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe. A combination of spectacular natural features, not least the stunning coastline of towering cliffs, golden beaches backed by rugged mountains and barren moorland. The abundance of wildlife and vast open space, the sheer scale of which can be overwhelming, add to this some of the best walking country in the world and you're left with an endlessly fascinating environment, made for exploring.

Coast/Beach
The beaches around Durness are truly magnificent, clean and safe. They are large and easily accessible offering space and endless opportunities to explore. Remote and empty there is nothing more romantic. Beaches surround the cottage. You are spoilt for choice. Slightly further down the coast is the mystical Sandwood Bay.
Golf
There are certain courses in Scotland, which may only have nine holes, but Durness Golf Course is on the 'must to be played' list. You don’t get much more remote than this but you definitely don’t get much more beautiful. It’s a simple affair, carefully placed along the stunning Faraid Head peninsula set behind the ancient Balnakiel Church – the most northern course on the Scottish mainland. Amongst many wonderful assets – is the light. It can be light here well into the night; evening rounds of golf are most enjoyable. In the height of summer why not try a round of midnight golf, with porpoises in Balnakiel Bay for company – who could ask for more?
Travel
The nearest airport is Inverness, which offers daily flights from the south. From Inverness take the A9 north to the Tore roundabout. You may now choose the east coast or the west coast route to continue your journey, both are through stunning scenery but the east coast route is about 30 minutes shorter. Durness is a 5 hour drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh (avoiding traffic).
Distances
Inverness is 102 miles. Ulapool is 72 miles. Thurso is 72 miles. Surrounding villages of Tongue, Kinlochbervie, Scourie and Kylesku and Lochinver are a short drive.
Further details
Durness is a tourist destination which is still very noncommercial. There is a fantastically stocked village store, post office and petrol pump. Restaurants and bars are available as are several local craft based businesses and coffee/chocolate and bookshop. There is a mobile bank on a Tuesday but there is a free ATM machine outside the village store. Wildlife ranger and tourist information services are well supported locally. Local attractions include Cape Wrath, Smoo Cave, Handa Island etc. There is a wealth of things to do and see in the area. Here nature is still in charge!

About the owner
The Cottage@Mackays is owned & built by Robbie & Fiona Mackay. We are a local couple who are very proud of our luxury cottage on the far north west tip of Scotland. Both born & bred in Durness we proudly live and work here. We have a keen interest in quality accommodation and own the local hotel Mackays Rooms as well as the village store.
We feel privileged to share our unique corner with visitors and need our guests to be 110% satisfied otherwise we have failed.
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We built the cottage@mackays ourselves about three years ago. We have created a very comfortable chic house which guests return to year on year.
The location of the cottage is fantastic. Located in the centre of the wonderfully quaint village of Durness, a minute walk to village store, golden beaches local pubs & restaurants it is very convenient.
There is so much to see and do locally and if the weather turns rough then you have a great place to hide with all the facilities and more you would expect.
Unique benefits of the property
The cottage@mackays stands out from the rest. the decor and cosy atmosphere speaks for itself - it's location is totally fantastic, convenient but peaceful.
The cottage@mackays is very similar to staying at Mackays Rooms & Restaurant. Modern highland chic, unpretentious but extremely luxurious.
A diamond in the rough!
