Almunecar: Pearl of the Costa Tropical

Spain's Costa Tropical has remained largely unspoilt, avoiding the over development found on other coastal stretches, and as such is ideal for those who wish to spend their summer holidays in peaceful surroundings redolent with culture and history, and yet having exciting things to do within easy access. Almunecar is a prime location for anyone looking for the ideal family holiday spot on this picturesque coast. The town can trace its history back to its origins as a Phoenician colony circa 800 B.C. The Romans colonised the area, and four of the five aqueducts they built are, amazingly, still in use today and well worth viewing. The Moors occupied the land from the 8th century, and their influence on the architecture and culture can still be seen. Almunecar enjoys a subtropical climate, with over 320 days of sunshine per year. There's nineteen kilometres of beautiful coastline, including beaches and coves, to enjoy, and a tranquil hinterland of rolling hills dotted with whitewashed villages.

Self Catering Holiday Lets in Almunecar

You'll find yourself spoiled for choice when selecting your self-catering holiday accommodation in and around Almunecar. There is a wide range of villas, apartments and houses available. You and your family would enjoy a townhouse right in the heart of the steep, winding, cobblestoned streets of Almunecar's Old Town, with bars, restaurants and shops conveniently close by. Or an apartment in an exclusive gated community with a swimming pool, tennis courts and a balcony overlooking the sea might suit you. Imagine a family holiday spent in a villa just outside of the town amidst olive groves and orchards. How does the prospect of a townhouse set in a hillside development with two pools, pergolas, fountains and waterfalls appeal to you?

Plenty of Attractions in and around Almunecar

You'll find lots to keep the whole family happy in and around Almunecar. Visit the Castle of San Miguel. Originally a Roman fortress, this impressive building was developed by the Moors and rebuilt by Charles III of Spain in the 18th century. The Majuelo Park Botanical Gardens in the shadow of the castle boast Europe's largest display of subtropical plants, and are centred on the remains of Roman fish salting pits. The nearby Loro Sexi Bird Park is home to 1,500 specimens representing 120 different species including peacocks, ostriches and macaws. Inland can be found the magnificent scenery of the Pena Escrita Park, a haven for walkers and nature lovers. If you simply feel like taking it easy, you can relax on the palm-fringed Playa Puerta del Mar, but remember that some of the most interesting and lovely underwater scenery of Spain's Mediterranean coast can be found along the Costa Tropical, so snorkelling or scuba diving is a must.
