Self-catering holiday rentals in Sarlat for your home stay

Visiting Sarlat is like taking a step back into history. This enchanting capital of the Perigord region of the Dordogne is an extraordinarily well-preserved medieval town which the modern world seems to have largely passed by. Among the quaint, narrow winding streets can be found 250 listed buildings, the largest accumulation in all France, so there are plenty of attractions in this ancient town. Among these is the Cathedral of Saint-Sacerdos. With its mix of various architectural styles including Roman and Gothic this ecclesiastical masterpiece spans the 12th to the 17th centuries. The Manoir de Gisson is an unusual medieval townhouse, two buildings in different styles linked by a hexagonal tower, which have been turned into a museum where you can see how the Sarlat nobility once lived. The authentic 14th century French character of this unspoilt town makes it a top spot for visitors. Not far from Sarlat are the extensive caves of Les Eyzies with their astonishing rock formations and prehistoric cave paintings and the exquisite formal gardens of Marqueyssac and the Jardins d'Eyrignac.

Holiday letting in Sarlat for your short break

There are wonderful and interesting places to stay in Sarlat and the surrounding area, whether you want to spend your summer holidays or take a short break in this beautiful region of the Dordogne. There's plenty to choose from if you choose to go self-catering. Apartments in Sarlat are often located in the medieval townhouse buildings themselves, so staying there is a little like living in history as the gas-lit streets are right on your doorstep and you can explore the town on foot. Cottages in the Sarlat area are also the kind of place ideal for those passionate about history. How about an 18th century stone house built into the ramparts of an 11th century castle? Or will you be spending your family holidays in an 18th century chateau in the rural heart of the Dordogne valley? Villas and gites in and around Sarlat have swimming pools, saunas and Jacuzzis for that touch of luxury.

Best time to enjoy Sarlat

Due to its mild climate Sarlat is good to visit in all seasons and there are exciting things to do all year round. Nearby are the beaches of the Dordogne river where canoeing is popular, or how about seeing the Dordogne valley from a hot-air balloon? For adventurous types there's rock climbing, horse-riding and caving available near Sarlat. The old town provides theatre and street theatre entertainment and hosts a film festival in November. Lovers of fine food will enjoy the Truffle Festival on the third weekend in January and the Goose Festival on the third Sunday in February.
