Closer to Quimperle rental villas is the town of Concarneau, which is a vital fishing port – an industry that has thrived here for centuries. Unsurprisingly the daily fish market in the town is excellent, while the old town is well worth visiting. Ville Close, as its known, actually sits off the coast in the harbour, linked with a drawbridge and as surrounded by fortifications that date back to the 1600s. Keen golfers will find plenty to enjoy during their trip to Quimperle farmhouses, with two 18-hole courses within a 20-minute drive; Queven is a woodland course, while Ploemeur is a championship-standard links. For a taste of culture close to Quimperle self-catering gites, head for the town of Pont Aven, where the artist Paul Gauguin settled for a period in the late-19th Century.
