Owners Direct set to celebrate a very British Christmas

August 2010

Owners Direct are going to be celebrating the very best of British with a festive round up of the great shopping, new year getaways, romantic breaks and family fun on offer across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Owners Direct, who specialise in advertising privately owned holiday accommodation direct from the owner, have over 30,000 holiday properties listed on their website. As well as an amazing selection in Great Britain, it also lists holiday options across the globe – from luxury city apartments, to remote and idyllic farmhouses – and the more unusual eco yurts and house boats!

According to a recent Owners Direct poll, 72% of Brits say that family time is the thing they most value about Christmas. So what better time to plan a getaway? This year they’re staying local, with a roundup of the best of British.

Best for shopping

66% of Brits surveyed said that buying gifts for people was their favourite thing about the festive season. So here’s a guide to where to shop until you drop.

We all know that Oxford Street in London is famous for great shopping – especially places like Selfridges and Liberty’s if you’re looking for something special. Avoid the chaos and start your shopping early if you want to browse in relative relaxation. And there are plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat – did you know there are nearly 500 restaurants within 1km of Oxford Circus!

There are some amazing Christmas markets to visit across Great Britain including the Edinburgh Christmas markets, from the Highland Village to sweet treats, the German-style market in Oxford which takes places at the historic castle and the Cheltenham market on the Promenade which is fantastic for arts and crafts.

Best for New Year parties

Our pick of the best for New Year is North Wales; a truly stunning part of Great Britain to see in winter time. Snowdonia National Park on the west coast of Britain covers 823 miles of landscape, with the highest mountains and largest natural lake in Wales.

Enjoy the New Year on the edge of Snowdonia National Park If you fancy a faster pace for your celebrations, take a trip to Manchester and celebrate with the cities revellers enjoying fireworks and great night life.

Best for romantic getaways

Want to get away, just the two of you?! Or maybe even ask that special question?! Warwickshire has some beautiful sights to see including the castle, and Royal Spa town of Bath has great shopping, architecture – and of course – spas! It is also perfectly placed to explore the West Country, Stonehenge and the Cotswolds.

Best to avoid Christmas altogether!

If you’re really just not into Christmas or anything festive then why not get away from it all and leave Great Britain behind for a winter break.

For a Christmas full of elephants, camels and rickshaws – but strictly no reindeer – India could be just the spot you’re looking for, and a chance to explore an incredible culture – curried goat anyone?! You could even spend it on a houseboat!

Even though you might be able to hunt down a traditional Christmas dinner, a trip to one of the Thai Islands could be the break of your dreams. Enjoy Christmas on the beach on Koh Tao or Poda Island, lie back enjoy fresh pineapple and mango as the waves lap at your ankles.
