Our villa, in the countryside just south of Moncarapacho, is quiet and private, being down a track, and having a totally enclosed, walled garden. The 10 x 5m pool is solar heated and accessible from a covered patio leading off the lounge. There is a further eating area with tiled table under arches of bougainvillea. There are very few steps, and some downstairs bedrooms, making this ideal for the less able, and the enclosed garden makes it great for children. There is air conditioning in the bedrooms. This is our holiday retreat and so has lots of reference books for the fauna and flora of the region, guide books, children's games and toys, and puzzles, as well as TV, DVD player, some CD/DVDs, and plenty of light reading. Also available is a cot and high chair. You will need a car to reach the villa and to get about to see the lovely country, the beaches, and the local markets. You can just see the sea from our villa and, if the wind is in the right direction, hear the waves!

Notes on accommodation
All windows and doors have fly screens, or in one case a hanging bead curtain. We have a safety net that can be erected to keep small children away from the pool area, though we would not allow that to mean we would turn our backs. Pool heating is through solar panels, which means it is likely to be cold in the winter! For winter lets, there is a large gas heater, an open fireplace in the lounge and the AC system provides for heating too in the bedrooms.

Accessibility
Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, which greatly helps those with restricted mobility. There is a small step out of the big sliding windows of the lounge onto the patio, and of course, a step down to the pool area. Apart from that the area is flat. The house was not designed with the wheelchair in mind, but we first came here with an elderly uncle and it worked well. Call and discuss if you want to know more.

Outside
Private pool is 10 x 5m and between 1.2m and 1.9m deep, solar heated (so you need reasonable weather to maintain temperature!), with a cover. There is a lovely tiled table under a bougainvillea pergola for dining, which also offers dappled shade; a barbecue is available; and there are wooden chairs and a table under the covered veranda. A high wall totally encloses the garden. Sun loungers/parasols available by the pool.

Coast/Beach
25 mins will bring you to Fuseta beach, our nearest, and with the advantage of being sheltered by an offshore island. The islands themselves offer further beaches. On beyond Fuseta is the island Pedras d'el Rei, reached on foot from the car park in about 20 mins easy walk or by little train, which children enjoy.

Golf
We are not golfers! But there are lots of courses our end of the Algarve. Back towards Faro there are courses at Quinta do Lago and Vale de Lobo, less than 1/2 an hours drive. To the east and Spain there are courses at Benamor, Quinta de Cima, and Quinta de Rima, also not much more than 1/2 an hour away. And plenty more we are told!

Travel
Fly to Faro airport, pick up a car, and drive for about 1/2 an hour and you are at the villa (we send you full directions). All car companies operate at the airport and most can be booked online.

Distances
(All by car) 3 mins to the mini market at the bottom of the road where bread and local fruit and veg can be bought. 7 mins into Moncarapacho our main local town. 20 mins into Olhão where there is an excellent fish and fruit/veg market. 25 mins into Faro, the capital of the Algarve. 35 mins across to Quinta do Lago. 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour to the Spanish border and 1 1/2 hours to Seville on the motorway.

Further details
We are keen bird watchers (when not just sitting around enjoying the sun!) and there are lots of places to go - details in the villa. There are the salt pans at Faro and Quinta do Lago, the Ria Formosa reserve near Olhão, another reserve at Castro Marim, on the Spanish border (around 1/2 an hour away), as well as a marvellous road outside Loulé that we call bee-eater alley for obvious reasons. Several different species come into the garden or can be seen flying overhead.
There is a 'house book' in the villa with lots of information about where you might wish to eat, or visit, as well as safety/emergency guidance. A drive inland takes you into the more Portuguese parts, and is well worth doing. There is a big shopping centre near Faro, on the EN125, Algarve Forum, that has a lot of interesting shops as well as a vast hypermarket, Jumbo. There are various markets on a Sunday that can be worth a visit; details in the house book.
The Portuguese tend to eat in the middle of the day and you can often find very good value 'prato de dia' (dish of the day) or even two courses, for less than 10 euros.

Guest comments
“Casa Rosmaninho was the perfect getaway for us. Peace and quiet, a nice clean pool, an ample barbecue, a well maintained interior, and loads of space. The pictures do not do this property justice. The helpful owners provide everything you need to make the most of your stay, worth every penny, thanks guys!” Tadhg 09/2010.
"We flew back yesterday and have to say we were chuffed to bits with the villa. The housebook was invaluable and thanks for this as it helped us frame where to go and where to eat. A lovely villa in a great location . I would also say that Daphne was great as well. We had a couple of problems with a leaking kettle so she bought a new one, also a problem with the gas cooker. Again, she was there to help us. Simply great, the whole experience and this was our first visit to Portugal and can understand why you have a home there." Tony 7/2010.

Owner profile

About the owner
We are now retired and have time to enjoy Portugal, to which we have been coming regularly for the last 15 or so years. We are busy trying to learn the language - not easy, but fun. We very much want to be able to talk with the people in our local Mini Mercado.

Year purchased: 2005

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We rented this property a couple of times with an elderly Uncle. The location suited well as did the house - we were looking for easy access for him and a bedroom downstairs. We gained peace, a secluded walled garden, sea view (a bit distant!), off the beaten track, but close enough to sea, tennis, birdwatching and the interior, and only half an hour from the airport.

Unique benefits of the property
It is our second family home and equipped as such. We love opening the front door and feeling immediately at home. It is well stocked with books and children's games. There are lots of maps and guide books to the area. Also several reference books for fauna and flora. We have put together a "house book" telling you everything you need to know (we hope!) about the house itself as well as ideas for eating out, shopping, or whatever. There are fruit trees in the garden as well as the solar heated swimming pool. We provide all linen, so no need to bring out those bulky beach towels. We love it, we feel relaxed when here, and so it seems do our friends!
