The amazingly white, long and wide beach at Alvor is a 5 mins walk from the apartment. Sand dunes with wild grasses edge this glorious area along with a variety of cafes and modest ice-cream parlors. This short walk to the beach will take you through a preserved conservation area.
Along the beach you will see a sports centre, a newly built promanade with restaurants overlooking the picturesque fishing harbour. Colourful windsurfing can often be seen in the distance along the beach.
Golf
There are many noted golf courses in and near Alvor. A few follow by Name, Introduction, No. of holes, par, and approximate distance (Km):
Alto Golf; 18; 70; in Alvor
Designer: Sir Henry Cotton
Fairways: Bermuda and rye grass mix
Greens: Pennlinks
Length: 6,296 yds
The open aspects and ruggedness add to the excitement and the Par 5 16th, appropriately named 'The Giant' at 660 yards is the longest in Europe.
Reguengo Golf; 18; 73; 8
Opened in early 2004, this new course is an absolute golfing gem. Situated close to Alvor with breathtaking views of the Monchique Mountains and the western coastline. The course plays through rolling hills and has undulating greens that are well guarded by impressive bunkers. Another big plus is the absence of holiday villas or apartments, making this one of the few Algarve courses where you can play in peace and really enjoy the wonderful scenery.
Pinta:18; 71; 12
Gramacho:18; 72; 10
Palmares:18; 71; 15
Penina Championship:27; 73; 5
Special interest holidays
On the outskirts of Alvor is a busy local private Airport where you can book Sightseeing Flights along the Coast or perhaps sky-diving. They appear to give safety training first.
Along the Coastline there are plenty of Caves to explore as part of a guided tour - for safety.
There are regular Boat trips from the Harbour/Promenade area of Alvor for Dolphin watching, Sea-fishing and exploring the local Estuary and Coastline. Some people travel to Vilamoura to join a Sailing Boat Trip that goes along another part of the coastline to see the Algarve from a very different point of view - usually in strong sunlight.
Take your camera with on any trip outside the apartment - there is so much to catch, remember and share.
Travel
The Algarve is served by Faro International Airport. Most international airports in Europe have flights to/from Faro - and cheap tickets can often be bought.
Car hire is relatively low cost and easy to arrange on arrival at Faro Airport or on-line before you leave. Alternatively take Bus or Taxi to Faro then a train to Portimao before taking another Bus/Taxi from Portimao to Alvor. Alvor is approximately 66km from Faro - taking less than 1 hour to drive along the excellent EU funded motorway.
Distances
This low rise holiday complex - Dunas - is within Alvor and about 5 minutes walk to the centre of this Fishing village that has many shops and restaurants. It also takes about 5 minutes to walk to the white beach. There you will find sand dunes, attractive beach cafes and free car parking. Along the coast the neast towns are Portimao to the East - about 5km by small coastal route or 12km using main roads. To the west is Lagos - a superb holiday town with a modern marina - that is 18km by road.
Further details
Close to the site is a supermarket with ATM, chemist, a local modern bank with ATM, Post Office and most types of holiday shops plus a wide variety of Restaurants - these include Portuguese, Indian, Italian, Chinese etc. The Portuguese are very fond of English speakers and will serve you as friends, politely and invariably in excellent English. Many local people also speak French and German.
We have successfully Registered this apartment at the nearby Town Hall of Portimao for full local Tourist Board Lodging - License No. 27868/10. Please speak to our local Agents or email us if you require further details.
In addition to local activities mentioned above you will find there are many Excursions to join that will take you for example to: caves along the coast, off shore fishing, flying along the coastline for photography perhaps, into the mountains and to the castles. Trips can often also be booked to for example Seville, Granada and Malaga in nearby Spain.
Exploring the Algarve coastline on foot, hired bicycle or car to find new and exciting scenes is very satisfying no-matter what age you are. Plus there are many and varied enjoyable restaurants that may lead to you wanting to return again and again. The weather along the Algarve varies from around 16 C in deepest winter to upper 30s C in mid-summer. It seems warm air from North Africa keeps the Algarve from the normal continental climate and we have often found it spreads inland for around 15km.
There is nightlife not far from the Dunas complex in Alvor - a nightclub attracts many people and entertains well into the night. Along the coast towards Faro is Albufeira where the busiest nightlife is organised.

Owner profile
Here we are enjoying a special night out.........
About the owner
We are a long married couple who have been taking holidays in the Algarve for over 20 years. On seeing Alvor we knew we had found the perfect holiday centre for ourselves, couples and families.
In the past Laurie worked in telecommunications, television repairs and minor property rentals while Jean has run a Guest House, done various accounting jobs and worked for the Rural Payments Agency.
Our interests now include our married children, grandchildren in UK and USA, good food & wine, photography, websites, cross-stitch and patchwork.
Year purchased: 2007
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
After discovering Alvor the next job was to find the perfect place to buy. We wanted and got, with lots of local help from ex-patriots, a holiday apartment rather than a residential flat, at a location equi-distant from the village, beach and harbour. In addition we were very impressed with the on-site swimming pool and delightful local restaurants and shops.
Travelling to the apartment takes less than 1 hour by car from Faro, the international airport serving the Algarve. Being away from flight paths was a consideration yet we are just a few Kilometers from local towns and other holiday resorts. Added to this a trip by car or tour bus will quickly take you into the nearby mountains to enjoy fabulous views of the coastline.
Unique benefits of the property
The apartment is very bright, south facing, and welcoming. As you enter you will probably immediately feel relaxed, yet safe. You will find you are on first floor, reached by lifts or stairs from street level or the cool underground car-park.
The sun hits both balconies most of the day so there will be plenty of opportunity to relax and enjoy the warmth.
Our friendly, sociable and helpful on-site agents will meet you to hand over the keys and pool pass (summer months), show you the apartment and provide you with a starter pack so you can begin what we hope will be a wonderful holiday experience.
On our 2 visits each year we replace items that need renewal plus often get busy freshening up some paintwork for our guests to enjoy.
Most locals you may meet speak good English.
