Portugal’s largest province, the Alentejo is known as of one the least populated areas in Western Europe. The expansive rural landscape with rolling hills, wide fields, unspoilt villages with their typical whitewashed houses, the fantastic climate and the friendly people make the Alentejo a very special holiday destination. 30 kilometers south of Evora near the village of Alcáçovas lies the farm "Herdade da Mata". Suckling cows, horses, donkeys, goats and many other animals enjoy the good life of an extensively cultivated farm. The Swiss owners bought the farm 15 years ago and with much personal dedication turned the place into what it is today: a well organized farm where the well-being of animals, especially various endangered Portuguese species, and the conservation of nature are important concerns of the owners. In order to share this special way of life not only with family and friends the owners opted to open their guesthouse to interested clients.

Owner profile
About the owner
In 1995 George and I decided to change our life and move from Switzerland to the Portuguese Alentejo. We had already known the Algarve for many years but were fascinated by the unspoilt beautiful landscape of the Alentejo. So we bought our farm, started to breed cattle, especially an old endangered species, the Garvonesa cow. In the meantime many more animals, endangered and not endangered ones, came to us. We love our country life in this wonderful climate and are happy to share it with our friends and guests.
Year purchased: 1995
Why the owner chose a home in this location
The property is very conveniently located, not too far from urban Lisbon and close to historic Evora and the vast Alentejano coastline.
The large size of the farm with it's private lake offers great privacy.
Unique benefits of the property
Our guests cannot only spend a relaxing holiday but can also follow the daily life of an extensively cultivated farm with suckling cows, horses and a great variety of other animals.
