These are a pair of rural cottages that have recently been restored by their Anglo-Portuguese owners in this delightful country property about 50 minutes north of Lisbon airport on the main A1 motorway. The cottages are both tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished with plenty of space. There is also an ample garden with fruit (when in season) from the trees for the guests to enjoy. There is a good size swimming pool and large sun deck together with a Barbecue area and tennis table and other games in a traditional open sided barn. There are several bicycles and other equipment necessary to complement an excellent holiday. The cottages are on the edge of a small hamlet with two cafés and a small general store all within 100 metres of the property. Fresh bread can be delivered daily to the house by the local baker, and the fresh fish supplier also calls once a week to the village. Close by (10km.) on the banks of the Tagus river is the famous castle town of Santarém.

Notes on prices
Prices are for the property(s) per week in euros. Minimum rental period of 5 nights. 10% surcharge for sofa-bed as extra sleeping capacity. No surcharge for use of baby cot (no sheets provided).
Changeover day
We prefer Saturday changeover days. Access is after 5pm. on your arrival day, and departure by 10am. on the final day of your holiday, unless specific alternative arrangements have been agreed meantime.
Casa de Portão (The Gate House)

Accommodation 2+1. This carefully restored cottage comprises a spacious double bedded room with a large en-suite shower-room. The living and dining room is comfortably furnished and leads off to a well equipped kitchenette. The cottage is light and airy, and gives on to the central courtyard of the property which, in turn, leads on to the garden and pool areas.

Casa de Muro (The Wall House)

Accommodation 4+1. This cottage is a spacious and tastefully restored two bedroom property leading off the main courtyard. The accommodation, giving from a main entrance hall, comprises one twin-bedded room and a second double-bedded room, with a very large fully equipped bathroom with external window. The combined living and dining room is well furnished, including a sofa-bed, and this leads to a small but complete kitchenette. The main room has patio doors leading onto its private south facing terrace, with table and chairs and a hammock. This in turn gives on to the garden and pool areas.

Notes on accommodation
Both cottages have fully electric kitchens and water heating systems. They are reasonably cool in the summer due to their traditional thick walls, and are heated when necessary by permanent wood burning stoves located in the living rooms. Electric oil filled heaters are also provided. The location is excellent for touring, for walking, bird watching and other rural pursuits. Bicycles, games and other equipment are available to help add to the pleasure of this property for family holidays.
Outside
The large south facing lawn is the focal point of the garden which leads on to the small olive orchard. The garden has several trees and guests are welcome to eat the fruit when in season. The swimming pool (10m x 5m) which is shared by the two cottages is adjacent to the lawn and has its own spacious sun deck area, which is furnished with lounging chairs and small tables, together with sun shade. There is also ample additional garden furniture for sitting and eating outdoors. The Barbecue area with its own large table and bench seats is in a traditional open sided barn which also houses the tennis table, darts board etc.
Coast/Beach
This is an excellent area for touring. It is strategically located for access to the West coast beaches and resorts yet is close to the historical monuments and beautiful countryside of central Portugal. Santarém is a particularly beautiful thriving market town with a good supply of historical monuments, cultural activities, shopping centre, cinemas, swimming pool and waterslide park etc. The twice monthly market is also well worth visiting. Close by are several important sites to visit.
Golf
There is plenty of good golfing in the area in Óbidos (40 mins) Rio Maior (30 mins) and the many well known courses of Estoril and Lisbon (50 mins).
Travel
Lisbon airport is about 80km. away with very simple motorway access. The car journey shouldn’t take more than about 50 minutes. A rental car is recommended unless you intend to stay put in the village.
Distances
Santarém is about 10km. away, and the centre of Lisbon 100km.
Further details
We have provided a good information package of local sights, monuments, restaurants and things to do, which is available in the cottages. For safety reasons (the swimming pool is not fenced) parents may want to consider the suitability of this property for young children. House towels and linen are provided. Swimming pool/beach towels are NOT provided.
