Sao Martinho do Porto is a beautiful sand bay which was naturally carved out. It is known as the children's beach for safety. The apartment building was built in the early 1970s (by my father), when Sao Martinho was a small fishing port. It became a tourist destination in the 1980s. In the late 1980s, the bureaucrats, actors, politicians and socialites from Lisbon tried to keep this naturally made 'concha' (seashell) a well kept secret to prevent it from becoming overrun with tourism. This has made Sao Martinho do Porto a virtually unspoiled family holiday destination where you can experience traditional Portuguese culture and lifestyle. Regarding amenities, there are two pharmacies, 24 hour DVD rental (seconds from the apartments), English speaking hairdresser and beauty treatments opposite the apartments, designated cycle track on the seafront, traditional (seasonal) Portuguese Cavaleiro with horse and cart to show you around the village etc.

Further details
Salir do Porto is a quaint village situated just outside Sao Martinho do Porto which is famous for its sand dunes. It has a scattering of bars and shops and a cash point machine. There is a public outdoor swimming pool (seasonal) and a recently opened small nightclub. There is a boardwalk through from Sao Martinho to Salir which takes approx 20 minutes to walk.
Obidos is a truly wonderful medieval town for all the family to enjoy, with many tiny shops, outdoor cafes and restaurants. The views from the castle’s ramparts are amazing. It was once the wedding present of a queen (we were married in the Pousada in Obidos, see www.pedroandtracy.com). In the residential area below, narrow cobblestone streets are lined with whitewashed houses sporting terracotta roofs.
Nazare is a bustling, lively town with a glorious curved bay which is safe for children. The beach itself is wide, clean and spacious. There are many shops, bars, restaurants and a children’s play park. Look out for the racks of drying fish and the street sellers (ladies with 7 skirts) selling nuts, spices and other titbits. You can walk far back from the beach front to find hidden shops, restaurants and cafes.
Alcobaca is a lovely day out with its proud monastery and beautiful shops, restaurants and cafes. The Monastery was founded by the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henrique’s, in 1153. The church and monastery were the first Gothic buildings in Portugal. On the outskirts is the Hotel das Termas da Piedade which has an amazing spa - well worth a visit.
Peniche is charming by day and lively by night. There are a plethora of fish restaurants which the fishing port is famous for. Here you can catch a boat (during high season) to the small island of Berlenga which is a great day out.
Other places worth visiting are Foz do Arelho (popular beach town with the Brits), Leiria (beautiful monuments), Batalha, Caldas da Rainha (the biggest town in the area) and Fatima.

Owner profile
Our wedding at the Pousada do Castelo, Obidos
About the owner
I (Pedro) am Portuguese American and my wife (Tracy) is a bonny Scottish lass. We currently live in 'sunny' Leeds, but visit Portugal from time to time. I was born into a construction family and my wife is an executive. We love to travel. I was a professional dancer (my wife was also a dancer) and have travelled the world, but Portugal is where my heart is. If you ever see us in Sao Martinho please do say hello, even if you don't use our apartments. We have met a lot of lovely British couples and always like to meet new people. And since I grew up there I can give you loads of recommendations for restaurants (off the beaten track) and places to go. Obrigado.
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
I (Pedro) didn't buy this property, I inherited it from my parents. My parents were born and brought up near Sao Martinho do Porto. My father built the building in the early 1970s. Each apartment (there are 6) was rented out to Portuguese families - one still lives there - and there are 2 ground floor units which are occupied by a cafe and fish shop. I used to spend my summers there and lived in the area (Caldas da Rainha) in my teens, so I know it very well. My wife first visited the area in 2005 and loved it. She particularly loved Obidos for its medieval charm and that's a key reason why it became the location for our wedding. Many friends and family flew in for our wedding and loved the area and have returned since. Most had only been to the Algarve before.
Unique benefits of the property
If you want a night of eating and drinking out then you just need to walk a few minutes and you're right in the heart of it. If you fancy having your hair and a treatment then you just need to pop over the road. Each bedroom has a balcony facing the countryside where you can enjoy sunrises.
