Sleeps 2/4 (1 Bedroom)

Antiga Casa do Castelo is nestled in the center of the oldest neighbourhood in Lisbon. You may become a true 'Lisboeta' in our little village inside the castle walls. The house sits on the old Roman road 'Rua Direita-Rua Santa Cruz do Castelo' and archaeological finds just under the corner of house date to the 5th/6th century BC (exhibited in the castle museum). The castle walls have helped to preserve the neighbourhood and traditional ways of life in this 'village atmosphere' in the centre of Lisbon. The house itself is a well-appointed two-storey townhouse consisting of a first floor with an open-plan kitchen/dining area, sitting room, an 'office' with books, writing table, tourist information and WC. French doors open to a view of the Castle parade ground. The fine rugs and subtle decor are a treat. The en-suite bedroom is upstairs with a small view over roof tops, the river and Palmela Castle in the distance. We have everything you need+free WiFi. See guest comments for more!

Further details
Antiga Casa do Castelo is great for walkers and people interested in experiencing local life in a traditional Portuguese neighbourhood. The best bit is you can get lost in Lisbon's laborynth and always know that there is a welcoming oasis at the top of the castle hill with the feel of home awaiting you. Lisbon is a very walkable city. One of the great things is getting lost and letting the River or Castle hill guide you back from the mysteries of where you have been. On the other hand, taxis and public transportation are successful alternatives.
The neighbourhood is mostly pedestrian and parking is only permitted for residents, so car rental is not recommended.
Antiga Casa do Castelo is small and self-contained but just outside the door is the sprawling 'Castelo de Sao Jorge' with its gardens, views from the walls, castle keep, museum, restaurant, café, comfortable castle cats dozing in the shade and centuries of history which tends to envelope everyone and everything. By day, of course there are tourists, but as they go down the hill, the real 'bairro' (neighbourhood) comes to its quiet, centuries old traditions with people chatting on their steps, grilling green peppers and sardines or talking about the latest football and/or political news of the day. The numerous cafés and tascas 5 minutes from the house can give you a nice meal, perhaps some FADO and pleasant introduction to the old way of life in Lisbon. And yet, just across the way is the nightlife of Bairrio alto: a short tram ride away.

Here we are once again in Lisbon! This time we felt a bit like Lisboetas living in a real house! The flat is very comfortable and the welcome really warm.

We have stayed in many self-catering apartments in Europe, but none as well organized and equipped as this one. We were most grateful for the welcome basket and for the help given by Rita and her aunt during our stay.

What a lovely apartment! We had a great few days and feel very lucky to have had Antiga Casa as our base. Thanks again!
