Further details
Alentejo wines are highly rated as are its olive oils. A local specialty is Proco Preto (black pig). Local food and drink is cheap and of good quality as it features local, fresh produce. Local bread, fruit, honey and cheeses make a wonderful light meal. Aguardente de Medronho is a local brandy made the fruit of the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo).

The villa is set in Alentejo’s rolling hills and open plains dotted with cork and holm oaks and olive groves. In spring the region is vivid with wild flowers and always a haven for bird lovers. The beautiful villages and towns in this area include Ourique, Beja, Mertola, Castro Verde, Almodovar, Grandola, Monchique, Vilamoura, Evora and others. They offer all you need in shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as fascinating historical, archaeological and cultural sites to visit. Or you can head south to the Algarve shopping malls and amusement parks. Ourique has everything you need in the way of supermarkets, shops, restaurants, banks, post office, health clinic, library and free internet access.

The Alentejo climate is wonderfully mild. During the summer months, temperatures are routinely around 35 degrees C during the middle of the day, and from May until September, the long evenings are easily warm enough to enjoy your meals alfresco on one of the villa’s several terraces.

Owner profile

On holiday at Udaipur Palace in Rajasthan, India

About the owner
My wife and I live in Swaziland in Southern Africa. Portugal provides us with a marvellous safe haven for regular holidays and eventual retirement. We can visit the opera, drink the local wine and enjoy the local olive oils and fresh produce. A real home away from home.

Year purchased: 2008

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Quite a number of our friends in Swaziland are Portuguese so it was not really unexpected that we decided to look for a European home in Portugal. We love the quiet, rural atmosphere in Ourique and yet it is so well located next to the major road and rail networks that the Algarve, the West coast and Lisbon are all in easy reach. The gently undulating landscape, filled with cork oaks and wild flowers, provides a wonderful peaceful backdrop for a get-away-from-it-all holiday. The Alentejo region of Portugal is one of the sunniest places in all Europe and a perfect antidote for anyone wanting to escape the overcast skies of Northern Europe.

Unique benefits of the property
The villa is recently built so it is in excellent condition and has quality finishes throughout. The large terraces provide protection from the blistering summer sun as does the saltwater pool. In the evenings a glass of Alentejan wine enjoyed on the roof terrace listening to the birds and the occasional cow-bell makes a relaxing way to end the day.
