Quinta da Escocia is a comfortable, rural farmhouse, set in its own 100 acres of pine, eucalyptus and cork trees. The garden and surrounding countryside abound with bourganvillia, hisbiscus and oleander. This charming, self sufficient farmhouse offers the chance to see real Portugal. With no neighbouring houses this Quinta has complete privacy and seclusion. Throughout the spring the surrounding hills are covered with flowers offering beautiful, unspoilt walks. Situated in Portuguese hills, half a mile from the small farming village of Pincho, where there is a good family run, rustic restaurant. The house is equidistantly situated between both the south and west coasts, with beaches approximately 20 minutes drive. The historic, bustling town of Lagos is a 15 minute drive. Full of shops, bars and restaurants, this charming town has plenty to do. Surfing, Golf and Horse riding are close by. The house is all on one level and with its lockfast pool. It is ideal for small children.

Notes on accommodation
An English house manager looks after the house and lives in Bensafrim and is on hand to sort out problems and give advice on most things. We have a folder in the quinta with information. Cot and high available through our house manager at a small charge.
Swimming pool is 10m x 5m and has a secure fence round it to keep out over enthusiastic toddlers from getting to the pool without being supervised.
There is an extensive library to suit all ages. Suitable wheelchair access. House and terrace all on one level.
Accessibility
The house and terrace are fully wheelchair friendly. The pool area is difficult owing to a flight of 8 steps' requiring two strong adults.
Outside
Large terrace. Two outside eating areas. Stone built BBQ. Lockfast (10x5 metre) pool and surround with ample sun loungers and shade area. Lockfast gate for security for young children.
Coast/Beach
The farmhouse is located roughly equidistant from the sophisticated south coast and the wilder natural west coast.( Approx. 20 mins by car) The South coast offers a wide range of beautiful beaches (Lagos 15 min. drive). Windsurfing, sailing, watersking and jetskiing is available The west coast has miles of unspoilt, natural coastline and wonderful sandy beaches and some good beach restaurants. Armado has a surf school (equipment can be hired) which is run by our housemanager's son, Toby.
Golf
There are 6 very different golf courses within 15 miles: Palmares, Penina, Boa Vista, Parques da Floresta, Alto and Morgado.
Special interest holidays
Horse riding and trekking through miles of unspoilt country is available through our English house manager within 2 miles.
Extensive walks through miles of beautiful countryside, famous for its wild flowers in spring and excellent birdwatching country - nightingales to listen to when dark! Our House managers son, Toby, runs his own Surfing School.
Travel
Faro airport is 60 miles or 60 mins on the new A22 motorway (some do the airport in 50 minutes!)

Municiple fish/vegetable/meat market mornings only in Lagos and Aljezur and weekly farmers market Saturday mornings only near bus station in Lagos...worth a visit. Abundance of restaurants/bars to suit all tastes in Lagos.There is a new restaurant in the village of Pincho (good food) run by our maid's daughter, Sandra. She cook take-a-ways which is very popular with house guests. Also several restaurants in Bensafrim.

About the owner
We live on a farm by the sea in a beautiful corner of South West Scotland. We have owned our house in Portugal since 1985 so it is now truly a second home for both us and our five children. We try to spend as much time there as possible and even after all this time never tire of exploring the Algarve.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We fell for Portugal having been on holiday there and with young children we wanted somewhere to escape to and to enjoy the outdoors with the added bonus of sunshine. Even 25 years ago we felt that the Coastal Strip was overdeveloped, Monchique was too high and too far from the sea so we split the difference and bought a ruined farmhouse in an unspoilt spot between the two. Nowadays we are very grateful for the A22 motorway which has helped a lot by making Faro Airport a genuine 60 minute drive.
Unique benefits of the property
We have the choice of the sophisticated South Coast or more rustic West Coast both within easy reach. You can easily organise a lesson or two through our House Manager whose son has a Surf School. Alternatively the House Manager herself has a Riding School at the bottom of our valley where you can go for a gallop around the local countryside! The biggest benefit that our house holds above others is the total peace and tranquility you enjoy whilst staying there. The surrounding hills reminiscent of East Africa abound with flora and fauna. The nearby village of Pincho is still a farming community and now has a rustic restaurant which is run by our Maids Family. Taking a holiday here will show you a side of Portugal which is lost to those visitors who favour the coast.
