Courela da Azinheira was built in 2003 in traditional Alentejo farmhouse style. The domed entrance hall links the bedroom wing with the main house, with the double height lounge and dining room looking out onto the terrace and swimming pool, and over the olive grove on the opposite side of the valley in front. The house has full central heating and is partially air-conditioned. Courela da Azinheira is for: Long lunches on the terrace overlooking olive groves. Watching our resident black-shouldered kites on a late afternoon skirmish. Catching foxes drinking from the pool in the early morning. The absolute silence of an Alentejo morning. The spring flowers, covering entire hillsides. Fresh-baked bread (still hot) from the local village bakery.

Notes on prices
Prices are for the property per week. 50% is payable on booking, the rest a month before occupation, together with a £ 150 deposit refundable the week after your stay if all is OK.

Notes on accommodation
For adults: Plasma TV + hi-fi + Portuguese satellite TV (Sky News, CNN) + wide variety of DVD films. The house has no phone line, so mobile phones need roaming facility. There is no internet facility, the nearest internet cafe being 15 minutes away. Good binoculars and a bird-watching telescope with tripod are available, plus numerous bird books. A good selection of novels. For children and babies: Inside - Playroom with wide variety of toys, puzzles, DVD films etc. Outside 2 swings, enclosed play area for infants with playhouse, sandpit, footballs etc. Babies playpen, highchair, bottle sterilizer, large-wheel pushchair for walks, baby bath etc.
Accessibility
Internally the house is all on one level with wide doors so easy mobility for wheelchairs etc. Doors to the outside have a 5-10cm step. Access from the terrace to the pool area is via steps, or a grass slope.
Outside
Pool shallow area for kids, plenty of pool equipment and inflatable safety stuff, foolproof pool safety cover (high-tension net cover, the best solution we could find for our 3 kids, and which we insist is put on when the pool is unattended by adults).
Coast/Beach
The Alentejo beaches are spectacular and largely deserted most of the year. The drive is 45-60 minutes.
Golf
There are several great golf courses near Lisbon, around 45 minutes drive.
Special interest holidays
There is plenty of wildlife to see, especially birds. Seen from the terrace: Wild boar, foxes, rabbits, partridges, Booted eagle, Bonnellis eagle, red kite, buzzard, osprey (just once), black-shouldered kite (daily), hen harrier, stork, and numerous other less notable species.
Travel
Car hire is essential. Lisbon airport is around 1 hour by car.
Distances
Walking distance there are a number of good walks around the house, either cross-country or along dirt tracks. 5 mins by car - The local village can be seen from the house and is called Lavre, a charming typical Alentejo village with narrow cobbled streets and tiny whitewashed houses. Modern features are 2 good restaurants (one cheap and one not so), a small supermarket and best of all, a bakery serving freshly baked bread all week. There are also 2 tennis courts available to rent nearby.
Further details
10 mins by car - a local lake is home to the Ciborro water-ski school. A wildlife park nearby has a small but fun selection of non-dangerous species, including zebras, and childrens play areas good family fun. Stork city a famous local viewing spot where a colony of up to 30 huge storks nest all year round. 20 mins by car - Montemor-o-Novo A small town with supermarkets, restaurants, and a hill-top castle. 30 mins by car. Estremoz Another hill-top castle ruin. Vineyards a number of vineyards where wine tasting and wine-buying can be done. 45 mins by car - Evora a World Heritage town with a fabulous roman wall around the old town a day trip must. Golf 3 or 4 excellent courses near Lisbon. 1 hr by car Lisbon no end of sightseeing.
Booking notes
The weekly cost is £ 1200 all year round. Down payment of 50% on booking, remainder before visit. Deposit £ 150, refunded after visit. When possible, we will meet you at the airport when you arrive to get you on your way.
