Salema Beach Club is a popular small holiday complex built around a large communal swimming pool. The complex has, in addition to the large shared pool, a supermarket, and restaurant plus shops, and a friendly bar with UK TV, a pool table and music. All services are very family friendly. Salema village itself is a picturesque and small fishing village, with a beautiful long sandy beach. For a small village it has an amazing choice of around 10 restaurants, varying from the best European and Portuguese cuisine to the traditional snack/pizza bar. Situated on the edge of the beautiful Costa Vicentina nature reserve, this is an excellent base for walkers and other nature lovers. With Lagos, the local lively and historic town just 15 minutes drive away, and the award winning Parque de Floresta golf course just on the doorstep, Salema offers something for everyone, without the crowds that are found in other more obvious tourist areas.

Changeover day
Apartment 1: Flexible arrival and departure days and durations.
Apartment 2: Thursday changeover and weekly rentals preferred.
In both cases, the apartment is available from 4pm on arrival day and must be vacated by 10am on departure day.
Notes on accommodation
Apartment 1: the apartment entrance is on the same level as the roadway/parking area, with just three steps to gain access. It is therefore acceptable for the less able bodied, although it is not suitable for wheelchair access. The remainder of the complex is accessible via stairs, including the pool area. Whilst not air conditioned, the apartment (having another above) remains quite cool in summer, and is quick to warm in winter. There are electric fans and electric fires should they be needed.

Accessibility
Families with young children should be aware that the main lounge area of both properties opens directly onto large balconies, which are at first floor level. The village, with its restaurants and beach is a five minute (400 yard) walk down a fairly steep hill, but there is parking if it is necessary for someone to be driven into the village because of poor mobility.
Outside
Both apartments have large first floor balconies accessible via the double glazed lounge door. Tables and seating available for dining "al fresco".
Ample free car parking - in the case of apartment 1, literally outside the door - in the case of apartment 2, within 50 yards.
Swimming Pool
Both these apartments have pool rights, thus all guests have free use of the large shared pool area, which also offer extensive sunbathing areas and free sun loungers, and a separate baby pool. The pool area has a card operated security gate to ensure its use solely by those apartments having purchased pool rights for their guests.
Coast/Beach
In addition to Salema's sandy beach (a blue flag beach, with lifeguards), with its sun beds, showers and restaurants/bars, dozens of very secluded and often deserted coves and beaches within the National Park area of the western Algarve are just a short drive away
The west coast with excellent surfing and is only 10 minutes by car, as is the holiday resort and beach of Praia da Luz, for those who like the more active beach resort with watersports and rides for all ages.
Golf
The Algarve boasts some of Europe's best golf courses - the nearest of which is Parque de Floresta Golf and Spa Resort, with it's 18 hole championship course, plus Tennis, archery, and spa, with a choice of restaurants is just a 5 minute drive from the apartment. Also the famous Palmares Golf, Penina Golf Resort, and the Boavista Golf Resort are all quite close to nearby Lagos, and just a few minutes drive away.
Travel
The nearest airport is Faro (FAO) is just 100km (about 1 hour 10 minutes drive), most of which is now fast motorway or dual carriageway.
A car is not essential, but it is desirable if you wish to visit some of the more remote beaches or do any serious sightseeing.
Car hire and taxis from the airport can be arranged on request.

Towns and nightlife
Just 15 minutes drive is the lively and historic town and port of Lagos, with its maze of cobbled streets, restaurants and nightlife. Boat trips leave from here daily during the summer and it is possible to go deep sea fishing, or you can take a boat ride to see the dolphins in the wild.
Sightseeing and activities
Besides the cliff walks through the Costa Vincentina National Park, there are beautiful sights to be seen just a short car drive away, including the Mountain of Monchique (about 40 minutes), Cape St Vincent, Europe's most westerly point, with its fort, museum, and lighthouse (15 minutes), Praia da Luz for watersports (10 mins), plus for the children particularly, Zoomarine dolphinarium and aquariums (40 mins) and choice of two waterparks around 35 mins drive. Remember to take a drive to the magnificent Lagos Marina and view the spectacular yachts and cruisers that come and go from one of the excellent marina side restaurants. Or even take a sightseeing flight from Alvor (Portimao) airstrip just 25 minutes drive away and view the spectacular Algarve coastline from the air (please ask for details)...

Hire periods of less than a week will normally only be by special arrangement.

About the owner
I am 64, semi-retired, and live in Biggin Hill, just south of London. I am married to Christina, who jointly owns the property with me, and we have two daughters, ages 17 and 14. I also have a married daughter aged 33. I had been coming to the Salema Beach Club since the early 80's, and all three children have learned to swim in the pool in the complex. I bought a timeshare in the complex some 22 years ago (apartment 2), so Salema is very much a second home for myself and my family. On selling my businesses in 2005, I satisfied a major ambition, and bought the three bedroom apartment for our family enjoyment into my retirement.
All our friends that I have introduced to Salema have also fallen in love with it, and most return year after year with their families.

Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
Situated on the edge of a national park area, Salema is little more than a slightly developed fishing village, and yet it still retains its unique and friendly charm. Fishing still plays a major part in village life. The club itself has everything for a family holiday - a small bar, a snack bar (which also sells daily essentials), plus the excellent communal pool. The staff are friendly, and everyone is always made to feel most welcome.
The village boasts 11 restaurants, ranging from snack bars, through Portuguese speciality to international cuisine, all of which are excellent and reasonably priced.
For all this, it is just 20 minutes drive from a major town with nightlife and shopping, and the magnificent Parque de Floresta championship golf course is just 5 minutes drive away.
Unique benefits of the property
The main property is spacious, has three good sized bedrooms, and large lounge, and is well equipped. The balcony is larger than most, and ideal for dining al fresco.There is TV (with BBC and ITV channels via satellite) plus DVD player, and even wifi for those that require access to the internet whilst away (ask for security codes). It is just 400 yards from one of the most spectacular beaches in the Algarve, and yet just a short drive from some beautiful, secluded, and almost deserted coves and beaches that the western Algarve is famous for. The adjacent National park is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and is excellent for country walks for those more energetic visitors. With parking literally outside the door, the apartment offers a relaxing base from which to enjoy the Algarve.
