The quinta is surrounded by woods of pine, cork, oak and eucalyptus, offering plenty of opportunity for walks to the adjoining church, the ruins of the ancient castle of Faria and the famous little chapel of Franqueira, at the top of the hill. Although quiet and secluded the quinta is only 6km from Barcelos with its famous Thursday market and many restaurants. The National Park of Peneda/Geres is an hours drive and the historic towns of Braga, Ponte da Lima, Viana de Castelo and Guimaraes are about 20 mins away. The estate produces its own Vinho Verde from the 6 hectare vineyard. Piers Gallie the owner and winemaker is always pleased to show guests around the winery and organize tastings.

Prices are for the property per week/per night in euros for 2 persons, minimum stay 5 nights.
An extra bed for a child (under 12 years of age) is 15.00 Euros per night.

Changeover day
We are flexible about changeover day, but we do request that guests vacate the flat by 10am.

Bedrooms: Bedroom with double bed, hanging cupboard, chest of drawers and several mirrors, window with a view to the cloisters.
Bathrooms: Full sized bathroom with a bath with shower attachment, basin and wc, table and chair. It also has a small window for ventilation.
Kitchen: The kitchen has curtains closing it off from the living room,
a table and seating for four, a fridge, hob, microwave, extractor fan and large window that opens. It is colourfully kitted out with local ceramics.
Living Rooms: The living room has an alcove window with seats, originally used by the monks, a window to the south with a cloister view. There is a sofa bed, traditional Douro chairs, chest of drawers, local rugs and textiles.

A welcome hamper is provided on arrival. All bed/table linen and towels are provided and twice weekly maid service.

Notes on accommodation
The guests in the Cloister flat have the use of a barbecue, dining table and chairs in the cloisters for alfresco eating.

Accessibility
The flat is on the ground floor, with one step up into it. It is close to the parking area and has space to leave buggies and golf trolleys etc. The drawing room of the main house is on the 1st floor, as is the TV and playroom. The swimming pool is 200m from the house and is reached by steps.

Outside
The gardens are spacious and verdant with several sunny or shady terraces, all with tables and chairs and parasols. The spring-fed swimming pool which is shared by the guests has a panoramic terrace and a spacious lawn for relaxation and sun bathing.

Coast/Beach
The long sandy beaches of Apulia and Ofir are 20 minutes by car. Further north the beaches of Afife and Moledo, popular with surfers are a 40 minute drive.

Golf
The 18 hole links course at Estela, one of the best in the north, and the 9 hole Quinta da Barca are both 25 minutes drive away. The scenic 18 hole course at Ponte de Lima is a 40 minutes drive.

Travel
Porto-Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro is 40 minutes drive. Vigo in Spain is 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Distances
Barcelos 6km. Braga (the Rome of Portugal) 20km. Guimaraes, a World Heritage city 35km. Porto, home of Port wine 50km. The National Park of Peneda/Geres 65km.

Further details
Barcelos, the nearest town has many restaurants, cafes, shops, banks and supermarkets. The famous weekly market is on Thursdays. The nearest grocery shop to us is a 1,5km. walk, in the village Carvalhal which also has a chemist and a medical clinic.

Booking notes
Upon booking a 50% deposit is required which will be refunded, should you cancel up to 30 days prior to arrival date. We accept sterling cheques or bank transfer. The balance is payable upon arrival.

About the owner
My father bought this old monastery in 1965 when I was 11 and its been home for me ever since, except for 6 years spent cattle ranching in the Argentine. In 1979 I returned to Portugal to take over the running of the quinta, restoration of the house and planting a vineyard. I met my wife Kate in Porto where she was working as a clothing designer in the textile business. In 1988, 2 years after the birth of our first child, Sophie we thought it would be fun to rent out accommodation under the Manor House Tourism scheme, a totally new concept in Portugal, to help owners of historical properties like ours with the costs of maintenance. Many of our guests have become firm friends and return every year, its really gratifying to know that other people appreciate this place as much as we do.
