Notes on accommodation
Wall-mounted heating/airconditioning units in every room. All rooms except bunkroom are south-facing, and large room has door onto terrace. Separate entrance for visitors. Mesh screen on doors and windows, and wooden shutters. Natural terracotta tiled floors throughout. The property is fenced. The garden has steps and terraces and the pool is unfenced, so small children must not be left unattended.
Accessibility
The house is situated on a hill, the drive is steep and while it is possible to drive right down to the front entrances, there is a carport with steps to the front door. Once inside, the house is suitable for wheelchairs, having no steps or lintels and with wide doorways.
Outside
The pool (11 metres by 5.5 metres). The water is treated by an electrolysing system and no chlorine is used. There are loungers, tables and chairs and a covered area. The house terrace has long cushioned chairs, a large table with benches where breakfast is served in summer and other tables and chairs - and beautiful views. Portable barbecues provided on request, and picnic plates etc provided, and washed up when used.
Coast/Beach
A 35 minute drive takes you to the coast. The nearest beaches are the Salgados, Armação da Pêra, and, a short drive westwards along the Via do Infante, the town and beautiful beach of Alvor.
Golf
There are two golf courses in Silves, Silves Golf and the new development and golfcourse of Amendoeiras. These courses are relatively inexpensive. Further towards the coast is the large, more expensive Pestana golfcourse of Gramacho.
Special interest holidays
In spring and autumn (walking in summer is too hot, and in winter often too wet) the locality is ideal for walkers. There is information available as to footpaths, length of walks, and so on. For those of our guests who do not have a car, we offer transport to and from their chosen walks at a reasonable cost. The Algarve Way and the "Via Algarviana" pass through the village.
Travel
Faro Airport is 45 minutes drive away, well marked and on excellent roads. A walking holiday is posssible without a car, as we will fetch and carry you by agreement, but for touring further afield a car is essential - there is limited public transport, and none to Vale Fuzeiros.
Distances
The town of Messines is under 10 minutes away and has a market, shops and restaurant. The castle town of Silves, a half hour drive away, offers more attractions, including the restaurant "Rui", famous throughout the Algarve and very reasonably priced. The castle is worth a visit. There is an Archaeological museum, a market, shops, restaurants and bars. The municipal park offers walks and exercise areas, and a leisure centre with large swimming pool, and well-equipped changing rooms.
Further details
When tides are high, small boats can be boarded at the Silves riverside quay, which take you down the river Arade to the estuary at Portimão - a trip full of interest to the nature-lover. Portimão is a large riverside town with cinemas, supermarkets, good shops, restaurants, concert halls and so on. From Portimão, east or west along the N125, or the Via do Infante Motorway, there are shopping centres with restaurants and cinemas, retails parks, and all the attractions of the area - the award-winning Zoomarine, which promotes swimming with the dolphins and has many other shows, and the other water parks, slide-and-splash parks, riding schools and a series of varied beaches with parking and restaurants. Spain is an hour away, Lisbon 2 hours - or 2 and a half on the highspeed train which takes you right into the city centre in the morning and brings you back to the Algarve in the evening.

Guest comments
We have not had large numbers of visitors, but among those who have come are some who have returned several times. They appreciate the peace and quiet, the many walks, the beauty of the region, the good and affordable local restaurants, and above all the opportunity of "switching off" from their busy lives.
Owner profile
About the owner
We are an English couple who have lived all our married life (50 years) in Portugal. (Martin's family has been in Portugal for getting on for 200 years). We moved to the Algarve in 2000, when Martin retired and left his law office in Lisbon. We chose this part of the Algarve because it is still largely unspoilt, rural and beautiful, and the changes are mostly for the better. When we used to come here for summer holidays with the family it often took about 9 hours from Lisbon to the coast, and once here it wasn't easy to find even the smallest of supermarkets. Now there is nothing you cannot find. But many of the older people who have lived all their lives in these villages still cling to their old ways.
Year purchased: 1998
Why the owner chose a guest house in this location
We bought these 2 old farmhouses because we fell in love with the view! Old farmhouses in the Algarve are getting harder to find, and we were lucky to find this property, belonging to one old couple who were both happy to move! We are ideally placed for exploring the Algarve, and with the entrance to the Lisbon motorway 10 minutes down the road a day trip to Lisbon is on the cards. Spain is an hour and a quarter to the East, and the wild shores of the Costa Vicentina about an hour and a half to the West. Our visitors can sit on long chairs gazing at the view, bathe in the pool, and eat in the local restaurants. Walkers can find long and short trails all , well-marked and well mapped, and for a small extra fee we will take you and collect you to and from the sart of your chosen walks.
Unique benefits of the property
We offer you complete privacy, with your own entrance and a door (from the large double room) onto the terrace. We give you breakfast and should you want lunch or dinner on the terrace we provide everything except the food, take the plates etc away and give you clean ones. No cooking, no washing up. The little living room/playroom is all your own. Whether you go sightseeing in your own car, rely on us to help you organise your walks, or just stay put, you are equally welcome, and for a small extra fee we can fetch and carry you The garden/land is fenced (because of the dogs - who are friendly) and quite wild, with orange, tangerine and pomegranate trees in rows along the terraces, oleander trees, vetiver grass and quite a lot of weeds - the house is on a hillside.
