A vast conspiracy to make you happy…. With sweeping views of the coastline, hidden at the end of an access road half a mile long, Monte Serra offers peace, quiet and safety for children: there is no traffic except for yourself, the neighbour or the shepherd and his flock. Moreover a wall with gate and lock seals off the pool area. Thirty acres of centuries old trees ensure privacy to 4 self-contained accommodations. The place is huge: guests seldom bump into each other but if they do, they probably meet a like-minded soul. The grounds hide many corners for a quiet chat or some enjoyable reading. The palm garden terrace with its gorgeous ocean view invites to high tea, sundowners or a festive dinner at the large marble table. Take a refreshing dive, seek the solace of the pergola’s shade after too much sun, stroll through the citrus groves, pick a grapefruit for breakfast or at night, enjoy the starry sky and scent of ”dama da noite”, a flower that awakens when the sun has set.

Pleasant in all seasons Monte Serra is a place for gathering family and friends keen to sharing joy and pleasure. With 4 independent accommodations one can choose between enjoying the others company or take refuge in ones own dwelling, the best of both worlds: - the CASARÃO, a Moorish flavoured manor house restored to its 19th century glory (6-7p). Its kitchen can handle a party of 16; - the CASA do PATEO, with azulejo tile panels gracing the kitchen and the patios bougainvillea canopy (4p); - the CURRAL or White Stables, a huge open space where children have their own den and stage for cabaret (4-5p); - the CASINHA, a cottage with rustic luxury, air-con for summer siestas and a twin-faced fireplace for a chilly winter night. Snug for 2! Details of the individual accommodations can be found on the other pages. The midday sun almost all year round beckons to 'al fresco' lunching on one of the terraces. And remember, the place is safe for children.

Check availability O Casarão, the Manor House (3 Bedrooms
The manor-like main house, restored to its 19th century glory, displays Moorish flavoured doors and windows, period furniture, Kazakh rugs and stylish bathrooms. Original terra cotta tiles clad the floors and antique azulejos depicting birds or flowers adorn kitchen and bathroom walls. The well equipped kitchen kept its original oven which once roasted twelve piglets to celebrate a village wedding. The cashier's office room became a stylish dining room and through the wrought iron bars on the window one may catch a glimpse of the shepherd and his fluffy flock as they go past the old track. Cobbled terraces amidst rose beds beckon to al fresco lunching. Thick stone walls, high ceilings and whispering fans keep the house amazingly cool during hot summer days; in wintertime log fires, art nouveau stoves and heaters keep the place snug and cosy. Summary: Corridor, living, dining, large kitchen, utility room, 3 bedrooms (2 double, 1 twin), 3 bathrooms(2 x bath, 1x shower). Area 220 m2.

Check availability The Patio House
The former quarters of the farm’s caretaker became the Patio-house. Guests remember the azulejo panel gracing the kitchen, the surprising bathroom arrangement, the bougainvillea canopy in the patio and the dining area brightened by a large window and the lovely view of palmtrees silhouetted against the sea. In summer, high ceilings and thick stone walls keep the place pleasantly cool; on the sometimes chilly winter nights the glow of a wood-burning fireplace can be enjoyed from a comfortable armchair while hot air, sent to the other rooms, keep them comfortable and warm. At the back, a secluded cobbled terrace provides a quiet private corner to relax or to enjoy -almost all year round- an ”al fresco” lunch in the shade of Algarve midday sun. Summary: 125 m2/1375 sq.ft under roof. Patio, living room, open plan dining area with kitchen, 2 twin bedrooms sharing a bathroom-cum-dressing room (with shower). Wood-burning fireplace with hot air central heating system.

Check availability The Cottage
This self-contained cottage, 'a Casinha' as the locals call it, rustic with luxury touches, is a charming refuge for two. Tropical wood parquet flooring in bed– and bathroom are a treat for bare feet and from the generous bathtub one can enjoy a view of the hills. Air-conditioning ensures cool siestas on hot summer afternoons and on a sometimes chilly winter evening the glowing wood-burning double-faced fireplace can be enjoyed either from a armchair in the living area or while reading in bed. Utter snug comfort for two! The privacy of a walled terrace overlooking the ocean and shaded by a bougainvillea canopy is an invitation for an ”al fresco” lunch. Summary: open plan kitchen with sitting and dining area, bedroom with double bed, en-suite bathroom with tub, shower, twin washbasins and separate toilet, private walled terrace. Sat-TV, CD-player, A/C in bedroom, wood-burning fireplace. Area under roof: 75 m2/820 sqft.

Further details
Monte Serra straddles a ridge in a still unspoilt landscape of rolling hills overlooking the Algarve beaches basking in the sun 300 days a year. Views, peace and tranquillity! Nearby tracks will take you walking or biking in the hills but you can also choose from nearby sandy beaches, tennis courts, famous golf courses, medieval castles, the scenic Guadiana riverbanks, the Ria Formosa bird sanctuary or the old town of Tavira where country cooking or more sophisticated recipes are served at very palatable prices. The world-class treasures of Seville are an easy 90 minutes away. At just 2 kms, a small yet well stocked mini-market has fresh bread in the morning and most of the daily needs waiting on the shelves. Angela runs the shop. Ask her to arrange a wonderful home made ice cream cake or a free range cockerel for the pot. On Sundays enjoy the have-it-all gypsy market: from socks to donkeys, from cheese to fruit trees, from BBQ lunch to riding boots.
