Further details
Tavira town, still a working fishing port and considered to be the most elegant and beautiful town on the Algarve. Tavira has a history going back to Roman and Moorish times, and with its narrow cobbled streets, ancient hilltop castle, old churches, traditional tiled houses, little shops and Roman bridge spanning the broad River Gilão which runs through the town, exploring is sheer delight. Tourism has had very little impact here, and the area is completely untouched by any 'yob culture'. There are plenty of little pavement cafes and restaurants, many along the banks of the palm-lined river, offering cheap and delicious food. There is a daily market selling delicious local produce, fruit, vegetables, meat and fish - all fresh and inexpensive. The nearest supermarket is approx 200 metres (open 7 days per week 9am-9pm). The nearest bakers, chemist, post office, newsagent, cafes, other small shops and cash point are only a short distance away. The tourist information office is half way up the hill towards the castle.
