The villa is a large detached house with modern facilities. It has been beautifully restored for open plan family living but retains traditional features and character. However, outdoor living is what you come on holiday for and alfresco dining is irresistible with food grilled on the custom built BBQ. To burn the calories, walks begin from the garden gate down through orchards and along woodland tracks. On warm summer days you can cool off at the River Beach (see photo) only 4 mins drive down a quiet country road. The setting is a stunning landscape with wide green river valleys, fruit orchards, olive groves, vineyards, deep gorges, mountains, lakes and forests. You can relax to a slower pace of life and enjoy the fresh air and the freedom of unspoiled countryside on quiet roads and country lanes. The Portuguese are warm hearted and friendly so don't be surprised when the locals in our village treat you like long lost friends or arrive with a bag of pine cones for the BBQ.

Notes on accommodation
The family living area has a huge original fireplace with chestnut beam. Because the walls of the villa are so thick the house is pleasantly cool during the long warm summer, but just in case, all bedrooms have floor standing fans for your comfort. The 3 double bedrooms are off the first floor corridor which leads out onto a large and very private sun terrace with views of fruit orchards, olive groves and vineyards to the hills beyond. You can watch the sunrise with your morning coffee or enjoy a cold beer or glass of wine in the evening whilst keeping an eye on the kids, asleep (maybe) in the adjacent bedrooms.
The terrace can also be reached via steps leading up from the courtyard making it ideal for relaxation and dining. You will find yourself being drawn back again and again to this special place. Last but not least we have your safety at heart and provide, fire extinguisher, a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector and first aid kit.

Outside
Our purpose built BBQ is very grand! It is located across the courtyard from the villa in an open fronted building with pantiled roof. No one has an excuse to be indoors on warm summer evenings because even the salad chef can work outside on the long marble worktops. As the sun goes down in the evening we have overhead lighting and a power socket for subdued lighting (we're romantics) Treat it as an extension to your living space and dine alfresco on the outdoor furniture whilst keeping the fire blazing with pine cones and wood. 3 sun loungers with padded covers are provided for your relaxation. These can be placed on the large gravelled area at the side of the house or on the sun terrace. Feel free to roam in the quarter acre orchard, just don't fell the trees! With all this talk of eating it's worth mentioning that local meat and vegetables are widely available and taste wonderful. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the prices with premium beers at 40p a bottle and good wine at £1.50.

Coast/Beach
The wonderful beaches of the Silver Coast can be reached in just over 1 hour. Our favourite is Sao Pedro de Moel (see photo) which although more distant than some, is a comfortable drive of 1 hour 20 mins. The last few miles take you through an ancient pine forest which stretches down from Pedrogao further north. A walk along the beach is highly recommended. It's quieter than Figueira da Foz although the latter is better if you prefer busier resorts with a wider choice of sea food restaurants.

Special interest holidays
At first, we didn't have a clue what a river beach was so I'll explain. The area is renowned for its River Beaches and one of these is situated only 4 mins drive away in Mosteiro (see photo) They're well organised with cafe bars, toilets and areas for relaxing and sunbathing; more like big pools than rivers, specially engineered to slow the flow of water. Some, such as the one near the villa have lawns and swimming pool ladders into the water. Simply drive down the quiet lane from the villa, park and swim. It's easy to spend all day here in the knowledge that you're only 4 mins away from base.

Travel
Ryanair have cheap flights into Porto (flight duration approx 2 hours) then it's an easy drive of 2 hours on the A1 south then east on IC8. Approx 2 hours drive from Lisbon on A1 north then IC8 east.
The roads are very quiet and well maintained; even the A1 is comparatively stress free helped no doubt by the low population of Portugal at just 10.5 million! A car is of course essential but because there are so many places of interest near your holiday location driving is not a chore.

Distances
Historic Tomar, lovely town with medieval castle and monastery plus big Friday market, 40 minutes. Penela, picturesque town with lots of character and cobbled streets dominated by it's well preserved castle, 25 minutes. Castanheira de Pera, gorgeously located in the foothills of the Serra de Lousa mountains and famous for its swimming lagoon and wealth of activities, 15 minutes. River beach in deep gorge near Sao Simao with waterfalls, picnic areas and cafe bar, 15 minutes.

Further details
Mosteiro River Beach, 4 minutes down the lane from the villa has a cafe bar with outdoor tables & chairs, toilets, & a large area of grass for relaxation & picnics. It is in our opinion the best one in the area & we're fortunate to have it on our doorstep.

The spectacular beach at Castanheira de Pera is 15 mins drive & has to be seen to be believed. It has a large restaurant with outdoor dining/viewing area. Large bathing lagoon where you can swim out to an island with lawns & palm trees, & to add to the thrills it boasts the largest wave machine in Portugal.

The villa and Castenheira de Pera are situated in the foothills of the Serra da Lousa mountains with exciting opportunities for hiking and exploring. If you can tear yourself away from the lagoon continue up the road into the mountains & stop off at a viewpoint a few kilometres out of the town. The views are spectacular.

You'll also discover delightful villages clinging to the hillsides before finally reaching Lousa. A walk from Lousa castle (details in our 'Welcome Book') is exhilarating and is rewarded by the opportunity of walking along the narrow lanes of the sleepy mountain village of Talasnal; deserted for 50 yrs before being lovingly restored to life.

Walks begin direct from the villa & meander through orchards, olive groves & woodland and there are miles of tracks and minor roads to explore either on foot or by car. Pedrogao Grande 10 mins drive is a picturesque town with ancient church, numerous cafe bars, supermarkets, banks and lovely park with children's playground and fountains. Historic Tomar and Penela nestling under their impressive castles are also nearby.

Spring is fresh & vibrant; a busy time for the Portuguese preparing land & soil for summer crops. Summers are beautiful, when deep blue skies contrast with the lush greenery of the countryside & linger well into autumn making the area ideal for a last dose of sunshine before the winter blues hit our more northerly climes.
