Luminoso, the name of the property, refers to the exceptional quality of light found in this part of Portugal. Absent from the fumes and pollution found in much of Europe, the millions of stars twinkling in the night sky are a testament to the clarity of the atmosphere in the Baixo Alentejo. Near the Barragem Monte da Rocha on a stretch of land that runs down to the lake, the land is part of a nature reserve with a plethora of unusual birds, animals and ancient trees. This area is one of the most rural and agricultural found in Portugal and that is its charm. Here you will still see the shepherds with their flocks, or encounter farmers moving their cattle along the small dirt roads whilst many of the tiny villages reveal a life that could be drawn from a previous century. Acres of rolling plains are home to the famous cork oak trees and, once known as the bread basket of Portugal, huge undulating acres of green turn to golden brown in the summer months as the grains ripen.

All electricity by solar system. Hot water from separate solar system (and fireplace).
Accessibility
Not adapted for wheelchairs, but no stairs and no doorsteps inside house, small doorstep to terrace. WC and showers standard size.
Outside
Situated on 40ha of private land with access to lake, surrounded by garden and patio, two terraces with built-in BBQ. Views over fields with lots of trees, and over lake. Pool set separate, 50m from owners house and guest house, only sharing with owners. Surrounded by nature with stunning views. Heating available in off season, not in winter.
Coast/Beach
Algarve coasts (Albufeira) about 50 - 70 min drive, there are beautiful beaches with the buzz of a tourist area, lots of restaurants and entertainment. West coast beaches (Zambujera, Milfontes) approx 60 min drive, long, quiet beaches, beautiful little towns and villages, restaurants, not as crowded with tourists.
Special interest holidays
Horse riding on-site and/or nearby. Kinesiology therapy sessions and courses/workshops. Courses in photography, painting classes. Information on request.
Travel
Faro Airport 1 hour drive, Lisbon Airport 1.5 hour drive. All roads are very good, new, well maintained and little traffic. Access to property only 2 km on small, well maintained gravel road from big main Lisbon - Algarve road. Use of car is essential.
Distances
Ourique is just 10km away, a pretty, small, Alentejo town with supermarkets, shops, restaurants. Lots of nearby towns and villages with pretty houses, traditional crafts, markets, exhibitions etc. Famous are Beja, Almodovar, Castro Verde, world heritage town Evora, Mertola and many more. Archaeological sites of great interest, wildlife park, museums, old mines, all nearby.
Further details
Ourique has some very good restaurants, lovely cafes, a library with free internet, an indoor swimming pool. Pingo Doce is the main supermarket, where fresh fruit, vegetables and meat/fish are available 7 days a week, up to 20h. There are three banks, two petrol stations, numerous ATM machines, chemist shops, a medical centre, various clothes, shoe and hardware shops.

About the owner
Heinz and Charlotte Wehrli run the 40 ha terrain with guesthouse, pool, horse stables and a big vegetable garden.
Charlotte started an education in the field of alternative medicine and became a Kinesiologist in the late 1980’s. Having settled on the farm in Portugal Charlotte is busy building up a practice in the Alentejo area where she offers treatments from her home in the middle of the spectacular Portuguese countryside.
Heinz, having spent any years competing in show jumping and eventing, is now settled on a somewhat quieter lifestyle enjoying his animals, the countryside and rural Portugal.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Being Swiss originally, we lived in Ireland for 26 years, running a big equestrian center. We wanted a more peaceful lifestyle and less rain. So we moved to Portugal.
We choose this area in the Alentejo, because it is still very rural and remote. We are in love with it's landscape and wildlife, the simple life of the people, the big herds of goats and sheep, the abundance of olive and oak trees, it's lakes and the brightness and clarity of a sunflooded country!

Even though the property offers such rare remoteness and beauty, it is only 3 Minutes to the big main road,10 Min to town or onto the Motorway, which gives easy access to the amenities of restaurants and shopping and to the two major airports, Faro and Lisbon.
