Pomar Velho is an 18th Century, fully renovated traditional farmhouse, situated in the São Mamede Natural Park, close to the Spanish frontier. It stands in its own grounds and terraces with fruit and olive trees and a small stream burbling through, close to the small hamlet of Galegos. This charming house is waiting to welcome walkers, bird watchers, history lovers and those who simply wish to relax and enjoy the scenery. The stone house is cool in summer, cosy in winter with its wood burning stoves and central heating.

Each year for almost 20 years, we - a group of friends - rent a self-catering place somewhere in Europe for a week in August. However Pomar Velho is special amongst the many chateaus, stately homes and other great places we have stayed! The house itself feels like a home away from home. It is impossible not to chill out - and it is really well equipped. We didn't use the dining room at all - we always ate alfresco under the mulberry tree. Marianne, UK
Last week of October. Sun was shining most of the week. Ken had filled up the outdoor pool for us, group of nine from mostly Finland, but also from Switzerland and France. The chilly pool water was perfect after 4-5 hr hikes, and for some of us also in the mornings. The house was spacious, comfortable, decorated with good taste. The garden and the surroundings perfect with sheep and hens and a lot of rocks. Pomar Velho rocks! Thank you Carole and Ken. Maarit, Finland
Owner profile
About the owner
We have lived in Portugal for the past 30 years and our Lisbon apartment was our family home until 15 years ago. Nowadays we live and teach at a university in the Alentejo province but regularly visit Lisbon for a shot of culture. We're always happy to return to the tranquility and beauty of the Alentejo. We have our own home here as well as Pomar Velho. It's a great place for children to play and explore, fantastic for family walks and picnics, and there are some beautiful villages to visit. Eating out is easy and inexpensive - genuine food, not something pulled out the freezer!
