Castro Marim is an interesting historic village overlooked by the Castle (10th-12th century) and the fort of Sao Sebastiao. It is on the edge of a salt marsh nature reserve, home to about 153 species of birds. The reserve adjoins the River Guadiana, the boundary between Spain and Portugal. A particular feature of the house is its large roof terrace which gives magnificent views of the castle, fort, nature reserve and river. The house itself has been furnished and equipped to a very high standard and provides a comfortable base from which to explore this interesting region.

Changeover day
The normal changeover day is Saturday but other days might be possible. Arrival after 3pm and departures by 11am.

Kitchen: Fully equipped kitchen with cooker, hob, fridge/freezer, washing machine, dishwasher. Small appliances include kettle, toaster, coffee maker, juicer, iron.
Living Rooms: The living room is large (31sq.m) and has two three seater leather sofas. There is a TV with Satellite connection and a Hi-Fi. The dining area has an extending glass topped table and six leather chairs. Patio doors lead onto the pool area.
Cleaning/towels/
linen/maid service:
Towels and bedlinen are changed once a week and are supplied. All sheets and pillow cases are pure cotton. The property is cleaned once a week. Beach towels are not supplied.

 

Notes on accommodation
The living room and bedrooms have reverse cycle air-conditioning/heating units. There is a large open fireplace in the living room. We have a removeable stairgate available for guests with small children. Please note however that the pool is unguarded.

Accessibility
The property has not been adapted for wheelchair use and all the bedrooms are upstairs.

Outside
There is a plunge pool (3 x 4 metres approximately). There is a brick built barbecue. The outside furniture includes a glass topped table for 6 with matching chairs, two of which recline. On the roof terrace there are two loungers, four chairs and a small side table.

Coast/Beach
There is a superb sandy beach at Praia Verde 7 minutes drive from the house. This beach has ample parking and beach side restaurants and bars. It is possible to walk from here to the small resort of Monte Gordo which also has a selection of beach bars and restaurants. In summer the beach is guarded and it is possible to hire loungers. The beach stretches for about 20 miles from the mouth of the Guadiana to the Ria Formosa Natural park at Tavira.

Golf
There are four golf courses within 10 minutes drive and a new championship course has been constructed at Costa Esuri just over the bridge in Spain.

Travel
The nearest airport is Faro. It is 57 kilometres from the house and about 40 minutes drive along the A22 motorway. It is also possible to fly to Seville which is about 135 kilometres away. We advise hiring a car at the arrival airport.

Distances
Castro Marim has a small selection of local bars and restaurants. The village has a chemists, a butchers, local bakers and daily market. There is a new Corvo supermarket. Vila Real de Santo Antonio is five minutes drive away. It is only 10 minutes drive across the bridge to Ayamonte. The motorway system between Lagos and Seville is toll free.

Further details
Vila Real de Santo Antonio is an interesting town with many shops selling local textiles. There is a pleasant riverside walk. It is also possible to catch a ferry over to Ayamonte on the Spanish side of the river. Both Ayamonte and Vila Real offer river trips to explore the Guadiana river. Vila Real is the terminus of the Algarve railway and an interesting (but slow) excursion can be taken using this line.
Ayamonte is a good shopping centre and also has a number of interesting restaurants and bars. It is worth calling at the Parador for a drink as its bar offers excellent views of the river. Ayamonte has a new shopping centre with a Mercadona Supermarket and petrol station. Here you will notice that nearly all the cars have Portuguese plates. Petrol (and cigarettes) are cheaper in Spain.

Booking notes
We request a non-refundable deposit of 25% of the rental price at the time of booking with the balance payable at least 6 weeks before arrival. We ask for a cheque for £150 to be deposited with us against breakages etc. This will be cashed only in the event of any damage being notified to us by our agents.
