Special interest holidays
The area is brimming with historical interest. The fortress museum is fascinating. Peniche has a long history of lace-making, which can be observed in several cooperatives still practising. Wonderful calendar of festivals, including the Easter processions, and the Festival of Our Lady of Good Journeys. Surfers, 10 minutes drive away are the surfing/watersports beaches of Praia de Peniche de Cima and Praia da Cova de Alfarroba, home to Peniche Surf Camp. Just south of Peniche, 20 mins drive, is one of the top rated surfing beaches in Europe - Supertubos. Peniche and the Isle of Berlenga are also renowned for their birdlife, and there are daily sea excursions to the nature reserve Isle de Berlinga, a precious bird site. Peniche occupies a scenic peninsula, great for walking. Gastronomes - a great place for traditional cuisine and wines at very reasonable prices, far below prices in the Algarve. Good daily farmers market for fresh produce, fish and olives.
Travel
Nearest airport is Lisbon - car hire at the airport or a coach leaves for Peniche about every 2 hours. One hour 9 minutes average drive to Peniche. The coach takes 90 minutes from Sete Rios bus station in Lisbon. A taxi direct from the airport to the house is about 100 euros. The entire holiday can easily be car-free, including transport to and from Lisbon Airport and all other regional destination of interest. Peniche and its beaches are walkable, and there is a nearby taxi rank
Distances
Lisbon is just over one-hour's drive away (60 miles/90 km) and makes a great day/evening out, the castles and palaces of Sintra are about 50 minutes away. Obidos is 30 minutes drive away. The whole of the lovely Estramadura (Silver Coast) region can be toured on day trips. Almost all destinations are easily reachable by public transport (public coach or bus).
Further details
Banks, ATMs, restaurants, bars, harbour, farmers market, supermarkets, small shops all just walking minutes from the house. Nice children's playground in main park near to house. Several good bakeries moments from the house, handy for delicious freshly baked breads and cakes for breakfast. Peniche is great to stroll around - there are a number of lace-making co-operatives, historic churches, the fortress museum, lighthouse, cultural centre, nice parks, shops to browse. And everywhere are traditional restaurants, and wonderful pastelarias (bakeries/coffee shops/ bars also serving homemade soups and light lunches and open until late). Peniche is very family friendly, in particular the restaurants are used to whole families dining. The old town is a maze of narrow streets, great for exploring. Watch the fishermen bring in their catch. Peniche is a small walled city with the tidal waters coming up to its ancient ramparts with the small boats moored in the evening. A stay in Peniche makes a great relaxing holiday in itself, or use it as a base for exploring this lovely wine-producing region and its abundance of historic towns and villages, castles and monasteries. A good base for excursions to Lisbon; in the hot months, it's good to come away from the city heat of the capital for the fresher Atlantic air of Peniche in the evening. Fatima, the tiny walled city of Obidos, and even the ancient city of Coimbra are all within reach for day trips.
