Owner profile
Only our dog Meg is missing!
About the owner
We – Rebekka, Tim and George – live on the Gower peninsula in Wales with our dog Meg (a Sprollie).
Rebekka works as a translator and Tim teaches magazine journalism at Cardiff University. George is getting into surfing, which is a big sport on Gower – and in Carrapateira too.
Year purchased: 2006
Why the owner chose a home in this location
When we visited Portugal for the first time, long before we dreamed of owning a house there, we had a good look around the west coast and decided that of all the places we saw, Carrapateira would be the ideal place to live.
Apart from anything else, it had a lot of similarities to beautiful Gower but with guaranteed sun, fresher fish and cheaper wine.
When circumstances allowed, Rebekka came over with her mum and George to search for a property and after a bit of trial and error found this house in the location of our dreams – right in the heart of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.
The bigger towns of Lagos and Portimao are an easy drive away. Alezur to the north and Vila do Bispo to the south have astonishingly good produce markets.
Unique benefits of the property
Lote 22 is close enough to the centre of the village to hear the fishmonger's siren when he arrives in the square. It is close enough to stroll to the surprising number of bars and restaurants that this deceptively small village offers. But it's perfectly positioned to be an oasis of quiet and tranquillity.
Importantly, it's also close enough to the beach to be able to walk there through the dunes. The coastline has numerous other beaches large and small, often at the end of a rustic lane, usually with a great cafe/bar.
If you're feeling active you can surf, windsurf, mountain bike, golf and walk the cliffs or inland hills.
Quite frankly, it's hard to think of a better place to have a holiday.
