Palmares overlooks Lagos and Penina is only a short drive away (20 mins) to the east of Lagos. Many other golf courses thoughout the Central and Eastern Algarve are within an hours drive on the motorway.
Travel
Faro airport is less than 1 hour drive from Burgau and the A22 motorway makes this an easy drive. Car hire is recommended (Luzcars are usually the best deal) to take full advantage of the beautiful countryside and deserted beaches. However, there is a regular bus service to Luz and Lagos. From Lagos there are bus and rail connections to Faro and other towns on Algarve, the rest of Portugal and even to towns in Spain such as Seville. Taxis are inexpensive and airport transfers can be arranged.
Distances
The villa is in Burgau but Praia de Luz is a few minute drive to the east and Lagos (the nearest large town) is a 10 min drive. To the west Sagres is less than 20 minute drive which is ideal for windsurfing/kiting enthusiasts. The area is steeped in history and provides a fantastic base for anyone who enjoys learning about Portuguese history.
Further details
There are shops, supermarkets, restaurants and pubs in the village. The Burgau sports centre has a pool, tennis courts, playground and other activities for adults and children. There is a new large municipal pool just open in Lagos close to the marina.
There is an ATM in the village and many others in Lagos. There are more restaurants, shops, pharmacy etc in Luz. LUZDOC provide a 24 hour medical service in Luz with English speaking doctors who are highly qualified and efficient. There are excellent hospitals in Lagos. Many medicines that normally need prescriptions at home are over the counter in Portugal and most pharmacists speak very good English and are helpful. Lagos has hundreds of restaurants so you are spoilt for choice. If you are feeling very ambitious you can always go to the market in Lagos and pick out your own fresh fish for the grill. However, any of the 3 main supermarkets in Lagos provide a huge array of fish and meat. Most have English cheddar and ham at the counter for a quick lunch.
