Casa Sabena is a stone former doctor's house set in a small hamlet on a quiet country road, surrounded fields with views to the hills. There are courtyards to the front and rear as well as a swimming pool set in the gardens which extend 150m to a stream at the end of the orchard. Within walking distance is a small shop and bar - very Portuguese in nature - and a large, popular restaurant and snack bar. You will find Casa Sabena featured in 'Portugal' magazine January 2008.

Notes on accommodation
The garden flat is very comfortable and full of character. It occupies part of the ground floor of a reconstructed stone village house and every effort has been made to retain original features. The thick stone walls mean that it remains cool in the summer an often welcome change from the heat outside.
It is entirely self contained with its own front and back doors with direct access to walled and gated courtyards both front and rear.
Children are very welcome and a travelling cot and high chair can be provided if required. The swimming pool is beyond the gated rear courtyard garden, and so is safer for them.
Smoking is not permitted on the property.
Accessibility
The garden flat is ground floor and there is no more than one step to access any area. It is suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties but unfortunately not adapted for wheelchair users.
Outside
The swimming pool is 4.5m by 11.5m with a shallow end accessed by integral steps and includes hydromassage jets. It is for the almost exclusive use of guests but as the owners live on site, they may occasionally use the pool. Around the pool are hedges for privacy and loungers are provided.
The barbecue area is large with a table and seating up to 6 people. It is partially shaded from the sun for comfort in the height of summer.
Guests are very welcome to enjoy the gardens, which specialise in herbs and lavender, and perhaps even picnic in the orchard.
Coast/Beach
The Silver Coast is about 45 minutes away by car. There are good long sandy beaches and particularly good surfing in the Atlantic rollers.
The resort of Figuera da Foz is ideal for children with an attractive beachfront full of amenities and a huge sandy beach. It is very popular with the Portuguese.
Travel
Car hire is essential to get the most from the area. Although there are good communications the house is about a kilometre from the main road bus stop.
The airport at Porto is about one and a half hours away by car and Lisbon is slightly further. Penela is about 15 kilometres from the A1 the main arterial road through Portugal with easy access to both airports.
Distances
Penela a lovely small town with a castle is less than 2kms away. Coimbra, Portugal's historic 3rd city and main University town is 25 kms. Tomar, a Unesco Heritage site approximately 25kms. Within an hours drive are Aveiro - known as Portugal's Venice, Batalha with its Monastery said to be the most beautiful building in Portugal and Bussaco Palace, now a 5 star hotel but formerly a hunting lodge of the Kings of Portugal, set in a unique forest where a major Penisular War battle took place.
Further details
Penela has all necessary facilities - banks with ATMs, post office, pharmacy, petrol stations, supermarkets, bakers, coffee shops and an excellent medical centre. There is also an indoor swimmimg pool and other sporting facilities. The latest films are shown in the cinema on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. There is a children's matinee on Saturdays.
The area has a number of restaurants within easy access and Coimbra has restaurants for almost every taste. However the area is short of dining out opportunities for vegetarians and vegans with self catering being an excellent option.
Coimbra is a cultural city and fascinating to explore with its Moorish past encompassed in the narrow alleys of the old lower town and its steep paved streets and steps leading up to the University high above the city and the Mondego river. The city has a packed cultural calender with concerts, art exhibitions and many museums as well as the unique Coimbra Fado.
Locally there are endless walks in the hills exploring this scenic area and enjoying the peace and tranquillity it provides.
The choice is yours - days lazing by the pool, visits to fascinating historic places, quiet contemplation in the hills or surfing the Atlantic waves - it is all here!
