Tapada do Barreiro is situated in the São Mamede Natural Parque which is widely recognised as one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas in the whole of Portugal. The farmhouse is located just outside the village where there is a bakery, grocers shop, restaurant and bar. The picturesque white washed villages, many with their own castles, and the fascinating geology and geography of the area make this a favourite haunt for artists, birdwatchers, naturalists and walkers. Leisure facilities available locally include horse-riding, mountain-bike hire, golf, tennis and lake and river swimming.

Outside
The house is situated in its own 10 acres of fruit and olive trees, 1km from the village, and it enjoys magnificent views which extend far out over the Alentejo plains. Behind the house the ground rises steeply to a hill ridge. Wild boar are endemic to the area as are a wide range of birds of prey. A small dip pool near to the house provides guests with the means for cooling off.

Walking: Walking the medieval tracks through the hills is a must, and we will provide you with details. Some tracks start from Carreiras.

Further details
Life has changed very little in this part of Portugal for centuries. Bread is still baked using traditional methods and cheeses, regional wines, honey and olives remain the mainstay of the local diet.
River bathing is available on the River Sever at Portagem and at various lakes in the area, the most convenient being Apartadura (6km) and Barragem do Póvoa (10km). There are municipal swimming pools at Castelo de Vide and Portalegre.
The English owners of Tapada have been farming near Elvas for more than 25 years and are now involved in agri-environmental consultancy and rural tourism. It goes without saying that they have an extensive knowledge of the area and the Portuguese way of life. Peter and Rosemary make a point of trying to be at the house to welcome you when you arrive. There is a phone in the house so that you can contact them in case of difficulty. They are also available to give you advice and information should you require it.
