Casa Do Mel (House of Honey) - This beautiful, much loved, Portuguese style house, is our second home, recently refurbished, offering the perfect holiday location, is accessed by a long private, gated, driveway and set back 400m from the road in a quiet, tree lined valley. The stone arched entrance hall leads to the lounge, tastefully, furnished in a homely, French country style. The principal rooms are very spacious with 4 bedrooms in the main house and a 5th in the attached annexe, with its own kitchen/utility. The house is set in extensive, mature and sheltered gardens (4000sqm) with lawns, flower beds and trees. The 10x5m pool is set in front of the south facing house and to the rear is a large, typically Mediterranean style, enclosed, courtyard with olive tree, vines and a built in barbecue for alfresco dining on those balmy summer evenings. It is hard to imagine that in this idyllic location, all this is just 8 minutes walk from the beach and restaurants.

Notes on accommodation
The Annexe: Accessed via the main entrance hall. This single storey building houses the 5th bedroom, shower room and utility room. The utility room has a washing machine, sink, cooking facilities and is available for guests for their personal use. The Utility room can be used as an extra bedroom, housing 2 of the extra child beds, but does not have the comfort offered by the bedrooms. Accessibility
The access driveway is unlit at night and is approximately 400 metres long, lined by trees, therefore a torch/flashlight is necessary when returning to the villa in the dark and these are provided. A car is not essential for those who enjoy walking but a car is always worthwhile in order to appreciate the Algarve and all it has to offer. Bus services close by.
Outside
The beautiful large gardens, enclosed by mature trees and shrubs, provide a private secluded setting to just relax, away from it all. The 10x5m private pool is located in the south garden with tiled surround and lawns. The trees and shrubs provide a succession of colour to the garden throughout the season. Garden furniture provides 10 sun beds, 3 tables and numerous chairs. built in BBQ area in rear courtyard as mentioned above. The pine tree by the pool with its tarzan swing offering fun for the children. Also in the the pool garden is the garden room and Wooden Chalet/Summer House with decking and BBQ, offering yet more social spaces to while away your time watching the others playing in the pool. The pool has underwater lighting. The following outside areas can be lit up at night: The pool garden, garden room, chalet, decking and BBQ areas. the courtyard and BBQ, The paths adjacent to the house and the roof terraces.
Coast/Beach
The beautiful beach of Santa Eulalia with its golden sands and unspoilt cliff walks, is just 10 minutes walk, with beach fish restaurant and excellent lunch stop at the Grande Real Beach Café, Atlantico. The area in general has some of the most beautiful unspoilt coastline on the Algarve with shallow waters and safe bathing in marked areas. The nearby bay of Praia da Oura has many watersports facilities and even more restaurants overlooking the beach.
Golf
It is just a short drive to numerous golf courses.
There are more than 28 golf courses along the Algarve. The nearest is Balaia Golf, a nine hole course, which is just 1km away and The Sheraton Pine Cliffs is 6Km. Vilamoura, the popular international golf resort is just 18 minutes drive. Information on the others is readilyavailable. The internet can provide information on all the courses. For guests aged 50+, check out the website 'golfforgreys' for up to 40% discount on green fees.

Travel
Trains:
From Ferreiras station (Albufeira) 10 minutes by car/taxi, it is possible to visit Lisbon on the tilting fast train in about 2.5hrs.
A railway runs right along the Algarve with stops near many of the main towns, between the capital, Faro and Lagos in the west.
Car hire can be inexpensive in the Algarve, please ask.
The nearby bus services are very good. There is also a ticket bureau only 10 minutes walk for booking events & excursions and this is also the main pick up/drop off point.

Distances by car: Faro airport 40 mins. Albufeira 5 mins.
Beach 2 mins. Balaia Golf (9 holes) 4mins. Seville Spain about 2.3 hours. Walking times: Beach 10 mins. Nearest restaurants 10 mins The Strip with its numerous restaurants and nightlife 15 mins. Tourism information centre, 15 mins.

Sports equipment: All weather table tennis table, indoor pool table, petanque, badminton/volleyball erected in the annexe garden. Various inflatables for the pool. A collection of indoor board games. For those who love to be pampered, you can use the Spa facilities of the nearby prestigious 5 star Hotel Grande Real, by arrangement with their reception.
Villa refurbishment: We have only recently purchased the house after more than a year of waiting, completing on the purchase in December 2006. Since January 2007, we started work right away, carrying out extensive refurbishments and improvements to the property, including major re-rendering and decoration of both interior and exterior walls, new floor tiling to most of the ground floor, rewiring and addition of many new points and lamps, The installation of air-conditioning, the installation of a new wood burning fire and surround, new granite worktops to the kitchen units, enlargement of the dining room, complete replacement of all of the furniture, beds, bedding, rugs, curtains etc. Outside we have also been very busy and have repaired and repainted the courtyard walls, the roof terrace walling has been renovated and in the front garden, the wooden chalet, decking, barbecue and table tennis areas, have just been added, offering additional social spaces for your and our enjoyment.
The next stage: of refurbishment which started in December 2007, is now complete, with lots of improvements to the the annexe building including all new floor tiling, newly furnished and tiled en-suite shower room, with marble top and shelf, new utility cupboards and granite top. New d/g door and windows with shutters, stone facias and window sills to match the main building. A new games room has been added, which now houses a pool table for the 2008 season.
Outside, the courtyard has been enlarged with additional lighting. We intend to continue with upgrading and improving our villa, each winter.

A 25% of total invoice, deposit is required when making your booking. The final invoice balance is payable 8 weeks before departure date.
A security/damage deposit of £500 is added to the invoice and is refundable within 14 days of vacating the Villa.
Air conditioning is provided at no extra cost, as long as deliberate wastage is not apparent. Management will hand Keys to you on arrival.
Guest comments
The villa is gorgeous both inside and out, in a lovely setting surrounded by trees and not overlooked. It has everything a group or family could possibly want on holiday. I loved it that there are different areas to eat (inside and out). At no point did I feel on top of anyone as there's enough bathrooms and bedrooms, well spaced away from each other. The interior of the villa is lovely and is equipped with everything you would possibly need, including lots of games, books and toys for the kids. I especially loved the pool, the master bedroom (I bagged that one) and the log cabin. Also, for those hangover days you've got a bit of English telly to slump in front of. It's a short walk to everything, including a lovely beach and cafe, the restaurants and the famous 'Strip'. A car would help for a party preferring to eat in, to transport shopping. About the owner
In 2005, five years after early retirement, we made a delayed but, big, big decision, to sell our house in England and go for a complete life change, following our dream to own a 'Place in the sun'.
We moved out, put all our possessions and remaining furniture, into storage and moved into our touring caravan on a seaside site in our locality. Yes, people thought that we were mad!
Three months later we set off for a 4 week trip to Portugal's Algarve having invited a handful of Estate Agents to help us find our place in the sun.
After seeing more than a dozen lovely houses, up and down the coast, we were taken to Casa do Mel. Wow!

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We wanted an older style house with charm, a big mature garden, in a secluded location, with space for a pool and as close as we could get to the coast. When we found Mel, we weren't disappointed, it already had a large pool. We soon realised that the location had so much more to offer, as we also love the area, the local restaurants and of course the nearby, beautiful, beach at Santa Eulalia.
We love being there throughout the winter period when we carry on with improvements to the house and its facilities with the wonderful winter sunshine of the Algarve, allowing us to spend most of our time out in the open. We did stretch our budget to buy Mel and made the decision to offer it as a rental property for the summer months.
Unique benefits of the property
We always dreaded the winter in England, especially now that we were retired and now that we have our place in the sun, we can enjoy our 'out and about' lifestyle all the year round, in the sunshine. After the rental season comes to an end we can't wait to get back to our 'little piece of paradise' - The house of Honey - Casa do Mel. Roll on September.
