This luxury apartment is in the new development of Domus Iberica, a mixture of apartments and villas on the edge of the small fishing village of Burgau, which is situated about one hour’s easy drive west of Faro airport. The apartment is the only one in the resort without neighbours above or below (it is attached on one side only). It is about 150 metres from the resort restaurant and the village is only a short stroll away; it offers a selection of shops, some stocking familiar British brands and a choice of English-language newspapers. At the bottom of the village is a lovely sandy beach. Within walking distance of the apartment are a dozen delightful restaurants, including one on the beach itself. More than two dozen golf courses are within an hour’s drive, the nearest being the Boa Vista course only 10 minutes to the east. Tennis and Horse Riding are also available nearby. Luz and the extensive beach of Praia de Luz lie around 5 minutes’ drive to the east. Lagos is 15 minutes away.

Notes on accommodation
The apartment enjoys both heating and air-conditioning. The floors are terracotta tiled with rugs in the living room and by each bed. All the furniture is new and of good quality.
Accessibility
The apartment is situated on the ground floor of the block. It is reached either directly by seven steps or, just a few feet further along the walkway, by a single step (then later, the doorstep of the apartment itself). It can therefore easily be accessed by pushchair or wheelchair. There are no internal steps. Note that there are no special bathroom facilities for the disabled.
Outside
The apartment's private veranda has a table and chairs. The communal terrace on top of this two-storey block is vast, and it offers views of the sea and the rest of the resort. The apartment is at the end of a block overlooking the broad end of a wedge of garden area, and it has an airy feel.
Coast/Beach
At the bottom of Burgau village is a family-friendly, sandy beach. At its rear is the beach cafe/restaurant. A 10-minute stroll brings you down from the apartment; note that the very last part of the walk is down a steep lane through the old heart of the fishing village. Some parking is available close to the beach. Elsewhere along this part of the coast are more than a dozen good sandy beaches, some with beach bars. Naturism is tolerated on some quieter beaches away from the crowds.
Golf
The Boa Vista golf club lies some 10 minutes drive to the east. Beyond that, another two dozen golf courses can be found within about an hour's drive.
Travel
Faro airport is a little over one hour's drive from Burgau. The A22 motorway makes the journey easy. Car hire is essential and a number of hire companies operate within the airport; it is usually better to pre-book. However, it is possible to travel by bus directly from the airport to Faro station, then by train to Lagos and finally by taxi (and/or bus) to Burgau.
Distances
To the east, the town of Luz is only 5 minutes drive from Burgau. Beyond that -around 10 minutes drive - is the bustling historic town of Lagos. To the west, Sagres is under 20 miles away and Cape St.Vincent about the same beyond. The major surfing beaches of the west coast can be reached within an hour. Lisbon is roughly three hours away (more if you take the scenic route).
Further details
The coast of the Algarve generally runs east-west and is sculpted into bays and coves. This shelters the beaches in this area from the seas and the breezes of the Atlantic. But less than 20 miles drive to the west is Cape St.Vincent, the “End of the World” headland, and beyond that - where the coast turns abruptly north-south and the winds and seas become more bracing - you’ll find the surfers’ beaches with their fabulous sand and spiky sea-honed rocks. The rugged terrain that faces the Atlantic Ocean is dramatic.
Back from the coast lie the Monchique mountains with their spas, their wine and their huge panoramic views. The Foia peak, at over 800 metres, is the highest point in the Algarve.
A trip to these places is highly recommended.
Activities: For sun-lovers, the beaches along this part of the coast will prove irresistible, with their gorgeous sand and their blue-green water. For nature-lovers, a dolphin watching trip on a fast rigid-inflatable boat from Lagos marina is a must (a trip early in the day is often best, when the waters are at their calmest).
Further to the east, from the banks of the river in Portimao, a small Viking-style boat will take you up the river to the ancient town of Silves, with its fort and churches. The marshland you pass on the way is home to many of the local storks; they will often spiral up into the sky in great swirling squadrons as the boat passes.
For children (and adults too), the Zoomarine water park can be found next to the EN125 at Guia near Albufeira. More than just a theme park, this is a marine education experience not to be missed; you might even swim with dolphins. Have a look at zoomarine.com to find out more.
The Algarve is well-known for its golf; there are more than two dozen fine courses along the coast.
Horse riding is available less than 10 minutes’ drive up the road. Burgau itself has a multi-sport complex.

About the owner
Helen and I live in Derbyshire. We've always loved Portugal and went there on honeymoon. We eventually decided to buy the apartment and have holidayed there many times. We find that this part of Portugal is wonderfully laid back and has the feeling of being off the beaten track, even though nearby Lagos and other towns have all the facilities you might need.
Year purchased: 2006
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
We find that this part of Portugal is wonderfully laid back and has the feeling of being off the beaten track, even though nearby Lagos and other towns have all the facilities you might need. The Algarve coast is sheltered and tranquil most of the year, and yet the West Coast - with its huge surfing beaches and sand dunes - is an easy drive away. We also like the accessibility of the area. You are only a short flight away, and the Algarve is not so large that it takes ages to get anywhere.
Unique benefits of the property
The apartment is in a new resort complex, but its position is one of the best on site. The south-facing veranda overlooks the wide part of a wedge of garden, giving it an airy feel. We also have a retractable awning which offers shade in the brighter months. Awning are rare in the resort. Ours is the only apartment attached on only one side; others have neighbours above, below, to left or to right, or all of these!
