The most secluded, and serene cottage at the most western point of Europe. 'Abelhas' is situated in 5000 sq.m. of its own land. It is 1.5 km from the village of Azoa (with its many restaurants and bars) and 400 meters from the Cabo da Roca lighthouse (continental Europe's most occidental point). Azoia is still an unspoiled village, sitting in the foothills of the Serra de Sintra. It offers a rare chance to sample Portuguese village life, well off the normal tourist track but with unrivalled opportunities for walking, climbing, exploring places, churches and castles. It is very close to the beautiful surfing beaches along our coast.

Outside
There is a full-width cobble stone patio. It is shaded by grapevines for most of the summer and covers a BBQ and sitting area. To the western side of the Cottage there is an Alpendera with a long table and benches and an uninterrupted view of the lighthouse.
Coast/Beach
The closest beach to 'Abelhas' is Praia da Ursa, it is only a short walk and a steep climb away... but it is hidden and exeptional. Other beaches, Adraga, Guincho, Praia Grande, Ericeira, etc...are between 7 - 30 minutes by car.
Golf
There are numerous golf courses in this area: Penha Longa, Estoril, Quinta da Marinha, Oitavos and many more, all within a 20-40 mins drive away.
Special interest holidays
As we are both artists, we have a long established art studio in the village where we give classes several times per week. Our morning lessons are suitable for all levels of experience and are in all classic painting media from drawing, watercolour, oil and acrylic to traditional tile painting.
Travel
Lisbon Airport is approximately 40 minutes drive. A car is desirable for exploring and, as the approach to the Cottage is a long a rough track, a low sports car would not be suitable. There is also a very reliable bus service connecting the village and Cabo da Roca to Cascais and Sintra.
Distances
The nearest Village is Azoia - 1.5km. Sintra - 9km. Cascais - 9km. Estoril - 11km. Lisbon - 29km.
Further details
Azoia, although containing a few imposing villas, is still very much a peasant farming village. There is one small general shop attached to one of the 3 cafes, a baker's van arrives very morning between 9.30-10.30. There are 5 superb restaurants and a very romantic windmill bar with suberb views. Small supermarkets are in close by Almocageme and Malveira da Serra. Hypermarkets are about 20 mintes drive away. The railway station at Cascais has trains every 15 minutes to Lisbon via Estoril, the journey taking about 30 minutes. Local buses run through the village between Cascais and Sintra. The beaches along the coast are large and sandy with splendid rollers for surfing (a tummy surfboard and flippers are in the store cupboard). The nearest beach is Praia da Adraga which is about 7 minutes drive away. The famous beach at Guincho, 5km to the south of Cabo da Roca and 9 minutes from the house, is where the annual windsurfing championships are held. Wonderful walks are to be found in the wooded hills and along the Atlantic cliffs. There are numerous places of interest to visit - the World Heritage town of Sintra with its 8th century Moorish castle, 14th Century Royal Palace and steep alleys. Colares, the centre of a famous wine-growing area, and the village above it, Penedo, are very quaint and close at hand. Lisbon, easily reached by train or motorway, is a most fascinating city not to be missed. Its 18th Century centre was built after the great earthquake of 1755. Take a tram from Cais do Sodré Station up the steep and narrow streets and visit the old Arab quarter, the Alfama. There are countless little restaurants in the Bairro Alto district and very reasonably priced. More up to date is the site of Expo 98 including its spectacular aquarium together with the nightlife and restaurants along the old docks area leading to it.
